How We Selected
I’m a certified strength and conditioning specialist and a fitness writer who found a passion for running and took it to the next level by being immersed in the sport. From nutrition and researching how to train as a runner, down to testing a bunch of gear.
I’m also grateful enough to have a few members from our team of dedicated editors and part-time runners to tap to help find the best shorts on the market. This story was done with Fitness and Reviews Editor Charles Thorp, NASM, with testing assistance from Senior Fitness Editor Brett Williams, NASM, and Senior Gear and Reviews Editor Ryan Brower.
During our testing of dozens of shorts and hundreds of miles, we made sure to pay attention to fit, materials, any chafing that occurred, waistband comfort, pocket(s) functionality, and moisture-wicking capabilities.
We understand that comfort is king when you’re on the trail or pavement for a long time. Sometimes it is a journey in itself to find the right brand and fit for you, but once you really find something that sticks, it’s the best feeling in the world. We’ve lined up the best running shorts for men in 2026.
What to Consider
Length
Who wears short shorts? Well, there are some runners that prefer a shorter inseam to keep things minimal while they’re ripping some miles. The length of a short is important because if you have too much fabric, it could get in the way. Likewise, if you have too little, you might run into the risk of chafing in areas. We consider the ideal length range to be between three and six inches, with the majority of runners' preferences falling somewhere in there. But there is also the occasion where a seven-inch inseam could make sense, especially when it comes to running shorts that you are also hitting the gym in or want to knock out a few errands wearing.
Liner
The liner is another piece of fabric that is typically a bit tighter to the skin to provide support, comfort, and can also help prevent chafing. Some shorts offer a built-in liner, and while others may not, you can still rock a separate liner in addition to your running shorts if you prefer. It can act similarly to compression shorts where it helps minimize bouncing and also keeps moisture away. You can opt to ditch the underwear when it comes to a comfortable built-in liner.
Pockets
Most of our editors prefer shorts with pockets. I’ll typically opt for shorts with decent pockets and preferably zippered ones to help carry my things when I’m out for a casual run. However, sometimes they can weigh you down when it comes to speedier miles. There are shorts that have minimal pockets that are intentionally placed to be out of your way but also help the functionality of the shorts.
Fabric
The fabric will vary and certain blends are going to be favored more amongst runners. Looking for lightweight and breathable synthetics will go a long way. Nylon, polyester, and spandex will help keep moisture away and dry quickly. While cotton is a natural fabric, it does absorb moisture which can lead to chafing.
FAQs
What Kind of Shorts Are Best for Running?
If we are talking about the most ideal pair of shorts for running, we truly can’t go wrong with something that has it all. A few pockets (maybe with a zipper or two), breathable fabric, a comfortable and secure liner, and something stylish that fits the vibe.
Now, if we want to get into the weeds, typically, ones with the drawstring on the inside of the waistband are preferred so we can keep it secure. A proper length short (3 to 6 inches) that doesn’t ride up is another big plus that adds brownie points. There are small features that are nice to have when it comes to pockets—such as a back pocket for your phone and keys or even single pockets for gels for longer miles.
How to Prevent Chafing in Running Shorts
We’re not sure if there are many things worse than the feeling of being mid-run and experiencing the start of a possible chafe. Chafing is a skin irritation that is caused by friction, usually when in combination with moisture and when the skin rubs against each other or on fabric. Common areas include the armpits, groin area, inner thighs, or even the nipples of your chest.
This often happens in the summer, especially as the humidity rises and although it might seem like all is lost, there are certain things that can help. The fabric plays a big role and being dressed for the occasion is key. Stick with shorts that are at a proper length without excess fabric, a built-in liner, breathable and quick-drying synthetics.
