DURING A RECENT trip to Turks and Caicos, I learned the hard way that SPF isn’t the only thing you need for a day in the sun. After spending hours on a boat, I ended up with a sunburn on the top of my head—the first one I’d ever gotten there. I didn’t think much about wearing a hat at the time, but after feeling the effects of that Caribbean sun, I knew never to make that mistake again. Now, a good summer hat is one of the first things I pack for beach days, vacations, and any long stretch spent outdoors. The best ones shield your face and scalp from harsh rays, feel breathable enough to keep you comfortable in the heat, and look stylish enough to finish off your warm-weather outfits. From classic straw styles built for pool layouts to performance caps designed for outdoor adventures, our Men’s Health fashion team found the best summer hats for men to wear before fall returns.

Best Summer Hats for Men

Cooling Bucket Hat

Pros

  • Cools to 30 degrees for up to two hours
  • Great for hiking, golfing, fishing, etc.
  • Lightweight and easy to pack without taking up space
  • Machine washable and odor-free
  • Comes in a bunch of colors

Cons

  • Not the most stylish option of all, but still looks cool with certain fits

During the summer I’m outside everywhere, whether that means at the park, day parties, or the beach club on vacation, so I’ve tested plenty of hats in the heat. But I always use this bucket hat style from Mission because it does more than block the sun. Once I wet it, wring it out, and wave, the polyester-spandex fabric activates to deliver a cooling sensation that lasts up to two hours. I normally do this during the hottest part of the day to avoid sweating bullets, and this is not something I find with every summer hat.

The material also dries quickly, but it’s so lightweight it never feels like a soaked sponge. Thanks to the wide brim, my face, ears, and neck get plenty of coverage when the sun is beating down. I love that I can wear it with anything—be it a tank top and shorts or swim trunks when I’m tanning by the pool. It’s an affordable pick that comes in a bunch of colors, which you could stock up on and also rock with your hiking fits.

Bora Bora Booney Sun Protection Hat

Pros

  • Wide enough to provide sun blockage
  • Mesh vents increase breathability
  • Cinches to stay put

Cons

  • Must hand wash it

When I know I’ll be in the sun for hours, I don’t rely on sunscreen alone. On beach days, this 3-inch-wide brim keeps my face in the shade, which comes in handy when I realize I wasn’t as heavy with applying the SPF as I thought. During a trip to Costa Rica, I spent more than five hours stretched out on the sand without an umbrella, and my face stayed protected the whole time. The mesh vents along the sides kept air moving when the 90-degree heat turned sticky by midday. And whenever the wind would pick up, I cinched the chin strap so the hat stayed put. Vacation aside, I throw it on for long hikes and outdoor festivals where I know I’ll be exposed to direct sunlight. Plus, it’s lightweight, packs down easily in a suitcase, and comes in plenty of colors. My only gripe is that you have to hand-wash it, which is a little inconvenient after a long, sweaty day outside.

Best Performance

On Lightweight Cap

Lightweight Cap

Pros

  • Best for runners
  • Perforated side panels increase air flow when sweating
  • Reflective logo increase visibility for nighttime runs
  • Branded buckle closure to adjust

Cons

  • One-size-fits most design, so double check the fit

For runners like myself who prefer to rack up miles outside all summer, On’s lightweight cap is exactly what I want on my head. It weighs next to nothing, and the perforated side panels let air flow through when the heat starts climbing. The curved brim gives my face some much-needed shade without feeling bulky like a full-coverage sun hat. The adjustable buckle closure lets me customize the fit to bolster the comfort level. To keep me from dripping completely, the sweat-wicking band helps keep moisture from building up when I start putting in the miles.

I also like the reflective On logo on the front, which adds some visibility when I squeeze in an evening run. It comes in a bunch of light, pastel-inspired colors that look good with your athleisure wear and workout clothes. The only drawback? It’s a one-size-fits-most design, so runners with especially small or large heads may want to double-check the fit.

Pros

  • Wicking sweatband helps keep your brow cool
  • Internal adjustable sizing gives you a custom fit
  • Straw material extra breathable

Cons

  • Might require more intense cleaning

I used to associate straw hats with dads grilling in the backyard or retirees on a beach trip, but they’ve become one of my favorite summer accessories. I’ve been rocking this one from Sunday Afternoon since last May. Beyond the style factor, the breathable weave and fedora brim make them practical when temps climb. It’s not as wide as Columbia’s version, but it still comes out far enough to keep the sun from hitting me directly in the face. It looks great with a tee and shorts or a camp collar and pants for a cool resort look. Yes, it’s made of mostly paper, but it’s not a cheap, flimsy hat that will fall apart after a few wears.

Linen Sunhat

Pros

  • Striped pattern and signature embroidered Pony logo make it feel more polished
  • Linen fabric feels breathable and comfortable in hot temps
  • Cleaner silhouette than wider brims

Cons

  • Doesn't have the same performance features as other options but still breathable

Not every summer hat needs to be built for a five-mile run or a full day in the sun. Sometimes I just want something that pulls your outfit together like Ralph Lauren’s bucket hat that gives nautical vibes. It has a more polished look than your typical outdoor hat, thanks to the striped pattern and signature embroidered Pony logo on the front, giving it that classic preppy feel the brand is known for.

Compared with performance-focused bucket hats, this one doesn’t have the same ventilation or technical features, so it’s not the one I’d grab for a long hike or a brutally hot beach day. But for casual summer plans like grabbing drinks on a rooftop or adding a finishing touch to a vacation outfit, it’s hard to beat. The linen fabric feels lightweight and comfortable, while the shorter brim keeps the silhouette cleaner and less outdoorsy than wider sun hats.

Lightweight All-Sport Visor

Pros

  • Open crown design lets you feel a breeze
  • Interior mesh fabric sweatband wicks moisture to help keep you dry
  • Best for runners and golfers

Cons

  • Not the best option for bald guys

I used to overlook visors because they don’t offer the same all-around coverage as a traditional hat. But after spending more time outside in the summer heat, I get why runners, golfers, and outdoor athletes swear by them. Lululemon’s visor does keep the sun out of your eyes and shades your face without trapping heat on top of your head. It’s a great option for hot-weather workouts when breathability matters more than full coverage. Though this might not be the best option for bald dudes looking for protection around your ears or the top of your head.

This visor nails that lightweight, barely-there feel I want on sweaty summer days. The open crown design allows plenty of airflow, while the curved bill helps block glare when I’m running or spending hours outside. The polyester-elastane fabric feels durable without adding bulk, and the mesh sweatband helps shake off light moisture when temps spike. After testing it on runs, I appreciated that it stayed secure and nonrestrictive.

Class V Brimmer Hat

Pros

  • Branded sweatband features FLASHDRY PRO materials that pull moisture away
  • Comes in three different styles
  • Perfect for camping, hiking, and long hours in the sun

Cons

  • Not the most stylish

Exceeding all our expectations is The North Face’s sun hat. With its airy full-brim design and UPF 40+ protection, it's perfect for long, sun-soaked days. The FlashDry-Pro™ sweatband works wonders by actively wicking away moisture to keep me dry and comfortable. The nylon fabric feels breathable and lightweight, and the adjustable chin strap actually feels good and easy to maneuver. Plus, the hat has a bona fide endorsement by the Skin Cancer Foundation, earning its Seal of Recommendation for its excellent UV protection.

What to Consider

Material

Look for breathable fabric like cotton, straw, or lightweight synthetic fabrics such as nylon. These materials provide better airflow and allow heat to escape. On the other hand, look for quick-drying, sweat-wicking properties in materials like polyester and nylon. With breathability and sweat-wicking in spades, the fabric of a summer hat shall keep your head cool and therefore your thoughts clear.

Sun Protection

It's recommended to opt for hats with a wide brim in styles such as bucket hats, sun hats, and fedoras to shield your face, neck, and even ears from the harmful UV rays of the sun. In the meantime, consider summer hats made with a UPF rating (ideally 30 and above) to ensure maximum sun protection.

Ventilation

Check for ventilation features such as eyelets or mesh panels on the crown as well as in the back that will enhance airflow and prevent your head from overheating. A few hat styles like trucker hats always come with back ventilation panels, but styles like caps and bucket hats don't always have them, so be on the lookout for these ventilation features.

Size and Fit

Ensure your summer hats fit properly by measuring your head circumference and choosing the right size. The best summer hats should come with an adjustable or stretchy closure in the form of a strap or band to let you customize the fit and prevent the hat from falling or flying off in windy weather.

Packability

Men's summer hats should also be ready for travel and packing; therefore, look for foldable or crushable options that are nonetheless made with sturdy materials or reinforced brims that can withstand frequent use. Summer hats that retain their shape after being packed are the best.
