Russell Crowe has given fans a glimpse behind the scenes of the training going into his upcoming film The Last Druid, after posing for a gym selfie with WWE star Drew McIntyre.

It's yet another historical action role for Crowe, more than 25 years after Gladiator first made him a global star. The pair are set to star in the film, marking their second collaboration after the upcoming Highlander reboot.

While McIntyre's role is yet to be revealed, Crowe will play a Celtic elder whose life is turned upside down after a Roman emperor discovers a hidden Druid settlement in the mountains of Caledonia. Set during the Roman Empire, The Last Druid sees Crowe's character forced to defend his family and community.

McIntyre shared the photo on social media, giving fans a look at the pair looking fight ready, after what we assume was a heavy workout.

Training has long been a cornerstone of McIntyre's life. Speaking previously to Men's Health, he said that the gym has been central to his wrestling success. Even after being released by WWE in 2014, he said he 'changed everything', working harder than ever to transform his physique. Rather than following fitness trends, his approach focuses on consistently getting the basics right.

Simplicity is at the core of McIntyre's approach: he trains his arms and chest using a 5-step routine he calls the 'Drew McIntyre Programme'.
