The 7 Best Gym Shorts for Men, Tested for Comfort and Performance

From squat-friendly, linerless styles to streamlined 2-in-1s with ample pockets

Quick Verdict: Gym wear is subjective, so it's worth choosing gym shorts that let you select the inseam length, waist size and inner liner that best suit your body shape and training style. My top choice is the Vuori Kore Short.

The best gym shorts help you to get the most out of your reps. They might not be the most exciting gym wear pickup – they don’t generate the same buzz as a fresh pair of the best cross-training shoes – but wear the wrong gym shorts even for a brisk lower-body workout and you’ll soon appreciate quick-drying materials and a well-designed inseam over pairs that chafe, sag or ride up.

Whether you’re setting foot in the gym for the first time or know your way around a calorie-crushing kettlebell complex, everyone can benefit from a quality pair of gym shorts. To help you find them, I trained in a bunch of the latest styles and put them to the test.

From goblet squats and sandbag lunges to row erg time trials and treadmill intervals, I put a range of the best gym shorts for men through their paces. I rewarded lightweight, comfortable, sweat-wicking and stretchy pairs, and marked down any signs of riding up, sweat retention or discomfort. Here are the pairs that performed best.

How I Tested

testing the best gym clothes for men
Luke Chamberlain

To compile this list, I gathered gym shorts from a range of activewear brands and wore each pair in the gym across at least two weeks of my usual upper-body, lower-body and full-body workouts.

When testing, I focussed on function, comfort and style, paying close attention to how stretchy they were, how comfortable the fit was, and whether I felt unimpeded during lunges and squats. I also assessed the feel of the inner liners, the usability of the pockets and the quality of other features like drawstrings and elasticated waistbands.

Finally, I checked how well each pair of shorts fared after several washes, as well as how quickly they dried. Plenty of reps, laps and intervals later, I whittled the selection down to the seven gym shorts listed below.

Best Soft-Feel Gym Shorts

Vuori Kore Short Lined 7"

Pros

  • Three inseam lengths and plenty of colours to choose from
  • Lined and unlined version
  • 7" version sits just right above the knees (for me)
  • Soft and comfortable inner liner
  • Unrestrictive feel when squatting and lunging

Cons

  • No zipped pockets
  • I found the 5" inseam version felt a little restrictive

Vuori is known for its all-day silhouettes and beach-to-bench versatility, and the Kore Short — arguably the most popular item the brand makes — is a great example.

With a soft, stretchy and sweat-wicking hidden liner (which keeps you supported and sweat-free and just so happens to be the most comfortable I've tested), these are an easy, grab-and-go pair of shorts that pair well with tees, tanks and hoodies. The elasticated waistband is comfortable and has an adjustable drawcord, while anti-odour tech keeps you feeling fresh.

I found that the Kore Short 5" runs a little short, so if you're tall or just prefer a longer inseam, I'd suggest opting for the longer version. The shorts pictured here are the 7" inseam version in a UK size large, and they fitted me perfectly at 6ft 1in tall.

The main drawback is they have no zipped pocket. There is a button-fastening pocket at the back, but I never had full confidence that my locker key would still be in there by the end of my workouts.

Best Quality Gym Shorts

ThruDark Force Motion Shorts

Pros

  • Designed and developed in the UK
  • High-quality design
  • Durably fabric with good stretch
  • Lightweight and quick-drying
  • Zipped back pocket

Cons

  • Inseam runs a little short
  • No zips on side pockets

Founded by former UK Special Forces soldiers, ThruDark's performance apparel is rooted in hard-wearing, military-grade designs that stand up to tough workouts, session after session.

The Force Motion Shorts are made for high-volume training, and it shows. Durable and hard-wearing, they’re a great shout if you train outdoors or your sessions tend to involve floor-based exercises such as burpees.

They offer a good amount of flexibility, which is necessary since they run fairly short and fit tightly around the quads and glutes. During squats, they stretched with me instead of bunching and creating tight spots – aka, no chafing.

The more subtle details – like the flexibility-boosting split hems, the comfort-promoting drawstring waist and the zipped back pocket – are what elevate the Force Motion Shorts even further. It takes them from a good pair to the only one you'll reach for whenever a challenging session is on the cards.

They fit true to size around the waist, with options ranging from 28" to 40". I found the inseam a little short, but the tighter fit and quality fabric prevented them from feeling loose, unlike some other unlined pairs.

Best 2-in-1 Gym Shorts

Squatwolf Limitless 2-In-1 7" Shorts

Pros

  • Well designed inner liner
  • Two zipped side pockets and two inner leg pockets
  • Nice colourways

Cons

  • Inner shorts not the most breathable

Squatwolf's Limitless 2-in-1 7" Shorts are one of the best lined pairs I've tried, offering a nice level of compression while still retaining the ability to move and stretch freely.

This is largely due to the length and thickness of the inner shorts. During lower-body workouts, they sat an inch or two beneath the bottom of the 7" main shorts, enabling them to stretch with me as I lunged and squatted. There was no bunching or riding up either, which I often find with 2-in-1s.

If you work out in a commercial gym – or want a shorts you can wear both running and at the gym – these are a practical option. There's a zipped pockets on either side, so you don't have to worry about your locker keys falling out mid-set. There's also an inner pocket on each thigh, which are handy places to store your phone without it bouncing around.

While these generally feel lightweight and minimalist, the inner compression shorts aren't the most breathable. For a pair with more airflow, consider the Squatwolf Mirage Shorts instead.

Best Value Gym Shorts

Gymshark Arrival 5" Shorts

Pros

  • Excellent value
  • Thin, lightweight and comfortable material
  • Plenty of colours to choose from
  • Two inseam lengths

Cons

  • No zipped pockets
  • Slim fit may not be to everyone’s taste

These no-fuss shorts are a Gymshark bestseller for a reason – they’re affordable, functional and available in enough colours to match any and all of your other gym wear. With these, you can pick up a few pairs for the same cost as more expensive styles, while still delivering when it comes to performance.

The woven polyester material is sweat-wicking, and they wash well and dry quickly too. They’re available in 5-in or 7-in versions to suit your height and preferred inseam length – and the thin, lightweight fabric stretches easily and feels comfortable during workouts.

While these are a slim-fit style, they still fit well on my relatively large quads. They are a solid pick for guys chasing leg gains — or simply anyone who wants an incredibly comfortable and reasonably priced pair of gym shorts that doesn't fall short when it comes to performance.

On Train Shorts 7"

Pros

  • Split leg design boosts airflow and flexibility
  • Hidden internal pocket
  • Flattering fit and a stylish look and feel

Cons

  • One pocket too small to fit a phone
  • Side splits cause short to ride up

The On Train Shorts are a minimalist pair that puts flexibility and freedom of movement front and centre, leaving you free to focus on your form. Featuring a side split on each outer leg, the linerless design and wide side openings combine to allow you to move freely.

The 7-inch inseam strikes a nice balance, providing ample thigh coverage without leaving excess material to flap or get in the way. They fit well and the material itself is lightweight and comfortable. I also found that it dried quickly whenever I wore these for a run or high-rep strength workout.

The version of these shorts that I own has no side pockets, which, despite being a total pain, haven't ever swayed me from regularly wearing them to the gym or for general day-to-day use. There is, however, a hidden internal compartment where you can store small items such as a locker key. Also, the latest version now does have side pockets, which is a bonus.

Best Gym Shorts for a Spacious Fit

Nike Pro Training Dri-FIT ADV Shorts

Pros

  • Good quality fabric and construction
  • Spacious fit ideal for big stretches
  • Quick-drying and moisture wicking
  • Zipped and drop-in pockets

Cons

  • Oversized fit might not suit everyone
  • One inseam length
  • No liner option

If you have big quads, these are the shorts for you. Featuring an exaggerated oversized fit, four-way stretch fabric and angled side vents, the Nike Pro Training Shorts are fully equipped to ensure your movement remains unrestricted, whatever exercise you throw at them.

The material itself feels durable and substantial. It also delivers the sweat-wicking, quick-drying performance expected from Nike’s proprietary Dri-FIT fabric. I'm a heavy sweater, but after wearing these for a full-body superset workout, I found that they didn't retain moisture. In fact, they were dry by the time I'd walked home.

The zipped side pockets make these a practical choice for wearing in commercial gyms or anywhere you'll likely be carrying essentials with you as you work out.

The elastic waistband ensures a secure fit; however, I found that these fit a little large through the waist and thighs.

Most Versatile Gym Shorts

Lululemon Pace Breaker Linerless Shorts

Pros

  • Lightweight, comfortable and quick-drying
  • Cut with plenty of room in the thighs and glutes
  • Under £50
  • Good quality and long-lasting material

Cons

  • Unlined version a little mimimalist
  • 7" version runs a little short on taller guys

The Lululemon Pace Breaker Linerless Shorts are lightweight, comfortable, quick-drying, and have pockets for everything – including a low-bounce, side-zip compartment for keys. I've had the same pair for three years and they've kept their shape, even with heavy use, showing few signs of wear.

They tick all my my boxes when it comes to performance, too. The four-way stretch material gives them plenty of flexibility and they're cut with plenty of room in the thighs and glutes for comfort and freedom of movement. The soft material also means they don't cause chafing.

I do often find that these are a little too minimalist for my liking. There's something about the thinness of the material that, while great for mobility, feels a little too flimsy. If you're tall, I'd recommend trying on the 9-inch inseam version. For a sturdier feel, it may also be worth trying the lined version, which comes in a range of colourways.

best gym shorts what to consider
Luke Chamberlain

What to Consider

Material

The best gym shorts are made from synthetic fabrics that are moisture-wicking, quick-drying and lightweight. To achieve this performance-boosting trinity, brands use a mix of engineered polyester and nylon, which are knit into unique patterns and textures. These are branded and marketed as technologies like DriFIT (Nike), Aeroready (adidas) and dryCELL (Puma).

Materials like elastane, spandex and bamboo are also integrated for stretch and flexibility. This is what allows you to move freely, without feeling like your gym wear is working against you when you lunge, squat and stride. Brands often describe these fabrics as having ‘four-way stretch’, which essentially means the material has been woven to move in all directions horizontally and vertically.

Lining

Choosing lined or linerless shorts is entirely down to personal preference. Lined will give you a similar level of support to light compression shorts and means you can ditch the boxers for more of a lightweight feel. Lined shorts also mean you can drop deep into squats and lunges without worrying about coverage on your inner thighs.

Linerless shorts give you a more unrestricted, less clingy feeling that can help you to drop into deep positions with minimal resistance. Unlined styles are also more versatile, as you can pair them with tights or compression shorts.

Pockets

It's rare nowadays to hit the gym without your phone in tow, so pockets are essential. Zipped pockets are preferable for storing essentials like locker keys, earbud cases and inhalers. Central back pockets remove the risk of slamming a dumbbell against your phone screen. If you prefer the feel of built-in half tight pockets, these keep your phone flush and secure against your thighs and free from bouncing around. Runners might want to consider waistband compartments to stash gels, too.

Fit

Finding the fit best suited to your body and training will take some trial and error to get right. Try on lined and linerless styles, as well a variety of inseam lengths. Pay attention to the fit around the waist, ideally opting for a pair with a drawstring, so you can alter the fit as your body composition changes day to day. Drop a squat in the changing room, smash out a few walking lunges – that way you’ll know what feels most comfortable to you. Steer clear of styles that ride up too much or bunch excessively around the inner thighs. The best pairs should sit snugly yet still give you the freedom to move in whichever direction you please.

What Should You Wear Under Gym Shorts?

What you should wear under your gym shorts first depends on the style you've opted for. If they have a built-in liner, be it brief, mesh or full compressive undershort, you don't really need to wear anything else, and adding unnecessary fabric into the mix can increase your chances of sweating and uncomfortable chafing. If your chosen gym shorts are simply a shell, consider wearing compression shorts, base layer shorts or specially-designed sports boxer shorts underneath.

Can You Wear Gym Shorts for Swimming?

You certainly can wear gym shorts for swimming, particularly if they're lightweight and fast-drying — plus a pair with a mesh brief liner will be closer to the real thing. But bear in mind that most gym shorts are not made to withstand the effects of chlorine and salt water, so may discolour or degrade if used regularly. If you take your swimming seriously, or just want to be fully comfortable in the water, we recommend investing in separate swimming shorts.
