Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson has never been shy about wearing an exceptional watch, as his longtime stylist previously told Esquire, but the piece on his wrist at yesterday's Moana premiere may be the most OTT yet.
Created exclusively by Jacob & Co., the one-of-a-kind Matai Tourbillon wasn't adapted from an existing collection or made available to collectors.
Instead, it was designed from the ground up for Johnson, celebrating both Maui, the demigod he voices in Disney's Moana, and the actor's own Samoan heritage through unqiue artwork and traditional Polynesian-inspired design.
Jacob & Co. hasn't revealed what the watch cost.
But considering the brand's most complicated tourbillon models already command prices well into six figures before bespoke commissions are taken into account, a unique piece of this complexity could plausibly be valued at around $1 million [approximately £750,000].
That would make it one of the most valuable watches seen on a red carpet this year.
What to read next
Over the years he's been spotted in everything from Panerai and Rolex to Richard Mille and Patek Philippe, while his stylist, Ilaria Urbinati, previously told Esquire that "every time he wears a watch, it gets written up."
This piece, however, is an outlier. Rather than simply showcasing a high-end luxury watch, it is an unusual but growing category of watches inspired by movies.
Or perhaps the role of the blingy wristwear on this occasion is to distract people from the first reviews of Moana, which may politely be described as mixed.
