The 10 Best Gym Bags for Stashing Your Kit in 2026

We packed up, carried and commuted with over 20 gym bags, rucksacks and duffels – these are the 10 worth your time

Jump to Products

Quick Verdict: In my opinion, the best gym bag in terms of practicality, durability and aesthetics is the Stubble & Co Kit Bag. The Built for Athletes Gym Backpack, with its large capacity and abundance of pockets, is a close second. Whichever you end up choosing, I'd recommend picking up an antibacterial inner bag for stashing your sweaty gym wear, like this one from Dirtykit. Keep reading for my full list.

Before you hit the gym, you have to get to the gym. That involves admin: gathering, packing, lugging – which is why investing in a quality backpack, duffel or holdall that can make your training life infinitely easier, is always a wise choice.

I've found that the best gym bags are robust and practical in equal measure. They’re also spacious and feature an easily accessible main compartment – key for carrying the bulk of your gear. Scuffs and knocks are inevitable, so I’d also recommend durable fabrics that are rip-proof and weather-resistant. Extra handles are a bonus for when you're muscling it into a locker or pulling it out of a crowded car boot. So are plenty of external and internal pockets, waterproof zips and padded sleeves – all handy for stashing and protecting a laptop and other loose items.

Then there are bonus features that will ensure it keeps pace with your fitness pursuits. I'm talking separate compartments that keep your gym shoes away from your workwear, multiple holders for carrying your bottles and shakers, and a built-in wet bag for the early morning lane bashers. If you’re an equipment-heavy gym-goer, consider extra pockets for keeping your accessories tidy, like straps, sleeves, bands and belts.

To help make your journey to and from the gym that bit more seamless, I packed up a selection of gym bags across a range of styles, sizes and price points and put them to the test. Here are the 10 that I personally recommend.

How I Tested

testing the built for athletes gym bag
Luke Chamberlain

To compile this guide, I gathered everything from lightweight, weather-proof backpacks for active commuting to heavy-duty tactical rucksacks and cabin-sized duffles to ensure I was testing a range of styles.

In total, I packed up over 20 gym bags and used them as intended over the space of a month. With larger bags, I carried my gym wear and accessories to the office for after-work sessions. For the smaller styles, I packed up essentials like a towel, water bottle and trainers for my routine jog down to the local The Gym.

When testing, I looked for gym bags that had a spacious main compartment and gave bonus points for extra organisational features, like shoe pockets, bottle holders and laptop sleeves.

I also paid attention to durability, both in terms of the toughness of the exterior and the ability to withstand rain, and the quality of the inner lining, zips, shoulder straps, buckles, drawstrings and other fastening features.

With the commuter bags, testing involved packing them up and assessing their comfort, practicality and ability to withstand wet weather when running or cycling the 13km between my flat and the Men's Health office.

Why Trust Me?

I've been a health and fitness journalist since 2019 and Men's Health ecommerce editor since 2023. In that time, I've spent much of my working days in the gym and on the road testing and reviewing the fitness products that you see across our print and digital pages. As an experienced product tester, I've tried hundreds of sportswear items, from gym tees and trainers to headphones, sports watches and more, so I know what to look for when searching for products that are worth spending your money on.

Now 10% Off

Pros

  • Stylish look and feel
  • Durable and waterproof
  • Made from recycled materials
  • Padded laptop compartment
  • Separate shoe pocket

Cons

  • Water bottle pocket on the inside
  • Shoulder strap design not the most comfortable

Stubble & Co’s The Kit Bag ticks all my boxes. It can be worn as a duffle or a backpack and features a laptop sleeve, shoe pocket and a large internal compartment. It's available in three sizes – 30L, 40L (both airline carry-on) and 65L – and four colourways.

For me, its best feature is its spacious main pocket, which opens up flat and has enough space for all your gear, while a separate section for shoes or sweaty workout clothes is perfect for stashing items you’d rather forget about.

I never found myself rummaging around blind trying to find a pair of socks or a missing earbud, because I could open it up and see exactly where everything was. There's also a handy mesh pocket inside, where I could stash things like a notepad and any smaller items that I didn't want loose in my bag.

Verdict: For me, the question isn’t ‘Should I buy a Stubble & Co?’, it’s ‘Which Stubble & Co should I buy?’. I'd say the 30L hits the sweet spot for anyone who needs a bag that’ll take them from the gym to the office, or vice versa – but you can safely go up to 65L without having to worry about it becoming too bulky. It looks great and it's waterproof, but it's a shame there are no bottle holders on the exterior. When packed heavy, the shoulder straps could also offer more support.

Best Gym Bag for Storage

Built for Athletes Large Black 45L Gym Backpack

Pros

  • Tough and durable
  • Large 45L capacity
  • Comfortable back padding
  • Waterproof cover
  • Load tested up to 20kg
  • Padded laptop sleeve

Cons

  • On the bulky side
  • Shoe compartment a touch too small

If you've ever been to a CrossFit gym or Hyrox event, you'll be familiar with Built For Athletes. At this stage, rocking up to the function with one of these in tow is virtually a rite of passage. Why? For one, it's durable. There aren't many bags that are so big, strong and sturdy that simply dragging one onto your back feels like a workout in itself. But it's also highly practical.

Even with my gym shoes, a change of clothes for the office, a laptop, lunchbox and protein shaker stashed inside, I still had room to spare. With a capacity of 45L, two side pockets capable of holding a 750ml protein shaker and a 750ml water bottle, plus two external pockets for additional storage, I had no trouble fitting all my kit and anything else into it.

It also doubles as a piece of equipment. Thanks to the heavyweight polyester outer and adjustable sternum and waist straps, it's ideal for resistance training – just slide in a weight plate in the padded laptop sleeve and you're rucking!

Verdict: This bag looks cool; it looks like you mean business. You can pack it heavy and never have to worry about it getting knocked about. But if you have to travel by train, tube or bus after your workout, I've found that it can be a little impractical.

Bulldog Tactical Backpack Gym Bag

Pros

  • Under £60
  • Internal and external organisers
  • Padded laptop/ plate sleeve
  • Durable exterior
  • Velcro section for adding badges

Cons

  • No side water bottle holders
  • One colourway

I've included this Bulldog Gear backpack because it's the best value gym bag I've come across.

There are few rucksacks of this quality at this price. It's made from a rip-resistant, heavy-duty polyester, so it feels super durable. Inside, there's a main compartment for storing the bulk of your kit, as well as a smaller, full-length sleeve with internal organisers – both of which open flat, which makes locating specific items easy.

There's also a padded laptop sleeve at the back, where you can slot in a plate for rucking. At the front, I found the two external organisers to be the ideal place to stash keys, a wallet, headphones and other essentials.

Verdict: This bag is my go-to gym bag for the working week. It fits heaps of stuff without it being too bulky – and the choice of pockets means I can still keep my kit well organised. When packed full, the adjustable straps on the exterior prevent it from becoming overly bulky – which is ideal on busy trains. The durable exterior also means it can be chucked into a car boot or overhead compartment and I don't have to worry about rips or scratches. My only gripe? The lack of water bottle holders.

Stubble & Co Motion Backpack 20L

Now 10% Off

Pros

  • No bounce when running
  • Waterproof outer
  • Padded laptop sleeve
  • Snug and adjustable fit

Cons

  • Shoulder strap pocket not waterproof
  • Nowhere on shoulder straps to store soft flasks

This new active backpack from Stubble & Co stood out during testing as the best gym bag for wearing on the move.

Designed with runners and cyclists in mind, it sat securely against my back when I was travelling, with no bounce. It’s impressively comfortable, even over longer efforts, and has plenty of ventilation through the shoulder straps and back panel for breathability.

With a 20L capacity, there’s enough room here to fit a change of clothes, shoes, toiletries and a laptop, while an external kangaroo pouch, shoulder pocket and top pocket make it easy to grab essentials on the go. It also performed well in bad weather: when I went out for a run with it in torrential rain, the inside stayed dry and water beaded off the exterior.

Verdict: This is a commuter bag – it’s not something you'd want to wear for trail races or ultras, as there’s no storage for soft flasks. But for anyone who runs or cycles to work or the gym, or in fact anyone who's simply after a practical, lightweight and waterproof backpack that works just as well for commuting as it does for hiking, this is the best gym bag for the job.

Pros

  • Lightweight
  • Comfortable fit and feel
  • Breathable and moisture-wicking

Cons

  • External pockets not the most practical

This weight-defying rucksack can be packed heavy without holding you back. Utilising Under Armour’s in-house Suspension™ technology, the shoulder straps absorbed impact and reduced pressure on my upper body when the bag was full by balancing the load evenly across my back. For extra comfort, the back panel and straps are padded in a ribbed pattern to promote breathability.

Verdict: It may be light, but don’t be fooled – this bag is roomy. I found that the sleeve at the back is big enough to stash up to a 16” laptop. The main compartment has a handy separate kit pocket, while three spacious, easy-access pockets on the exterior – along with two extra-long, 1L bottle carriers, which sit on either side – provide plenty of choice for organising your kit.

Best Gym Bag for Race Day

Built For Athletes Elite Backpack

Pros

  • Thermo-lined pocket for temperature-sensitive food
  • Wet compartment
  • More compact than original version

Cons

  • Not as big as regular version

The Elite version of Built For Athletes’ popular gym bag is the perfect companion for race day. Three large compartments sit on the front: a hard case for stashing valuables, a wet pocket for dirty kit, and a thermo-lined compartment for storing meal prep and shakes.

The MH Verdict: This 35L Elite version is more refined and practical than the larger, more rugged OG Built For Athletes Pro Series Backpack. It’s still big, strong and durable. It still looks cool and give the impression you mean business. But with those new, thoughtfully placed compartments on the exterior, it’s even better placed to support your nutrition goals and organise your gym gear day-to-day.

Dirtykit Antibacterial Bag

Pros

  • Separates wet kit from gym bag
  • Waterproof and antibacterial
  • Prevents build up of odour inside gym bag
  • Doubles as a packing cube
  • Zipper creates seal
  • Good value

Cons

  • One size and colour

You might not think something like the Dirtykit antibacterial bag is necessary – after all, most good gym bags now feature a wet pocket. But in my experience, it always pays to have something like this on hand. As a heavy sweater, I've lost count of the times I've used said compartment to store my gym shoes and been left needing somewhere to carry my sweaty gym wear.

Verdict: In my opinion, this is an essential piece of kit that everyone should own. It'll keep your gym bag cleaner and free of bad odours from dirty kit. It's also just a smart decision from a hygiene standpoint – one study found that 96% of shoes carry traces of faecal matter. Do you really want that rubbing against your favourite tee?

Best Duffle Bag for the Gym

Adidas Duffle Bag

Pros

  • Spacious main compartment
  • Great value
  • Two ways to wear

Cons

  • Not the most durable
  • Shoulder strap can be uncomfortable

Duffle bags don't need to be flashy. After all, there's only one reason I'm reaching for one of these over a rucksack for the gym, and that's to fit lots of kit inside.

This budget version from Adidas is no-frills, but does exactly what I want it to. The main compartment opens up flat, revealing a spacious area for throwing in the bulk of my gear. External pockets on each end are handy for keeping gym shoes and water bottles, while a side pocket was where I put my keys and earbuds during testing.

A small detail, but one that shouldn't be underestimated: it has both short carry handles for carrying in one hand, plus a shoulder strap for wearing on either one shoulder or cross-body.

Verdict: This duffel bag is something I always like to have around whenever my go-to rucksack is a little too small or I want to keep my gym gear separate from my work stuff. I particularly like that it packs down small and can be folded into another bag when empty.

Pros

  • Built-in organisers
  • Great option for triathletes
  • Waterproof pocket for wet kit
  • Smart keyring

Cons

  • Compartments take up space
  • No laptop sleeve

This bag opens flat, with three zipped compartments that help to keep your gear neatly organised and easily accessible. The bottom pocket is waterproof – I used to store sweaty gym wear and outdoor shoes. Up top, there's a zipped, weatherproof pocket, great for stashing your wallet, keys and headphones – and there's extra padding on the back panel to protect laptops and other tech. On each side, spacious compartments are handy for carrying a water bottle and shaker.

The MH Verdict: If you're prone to misplacing your kit, this backpack from BLOXX is a game-changer. With eight thoughtfully located compartments that make arranging and finding your belongings quick and effortless, it’s ideal for training around the 9-5. But if you plan on using this as a weekend bag or carry a lot of kit, consider getting the larger version, as the 28L option is a little on the small side.

Stolt Alpha Backpack

Pros

  • Easy access waist pockets
  • Adjustable waist and shoulder straps
  • No bounce

Cons

This commuter-friendly gym bag is reserved for those who take the scenic route. Whether you journey to work on two feet or two wheels, it has a water-resistant outer, power stitching and high-quality zips to ensure it holds up to repeated wear and tear, while also keeping your stuff dry when you get caught in a downpour.

The MH Verdict: The Alpha Backpack hits the sweet spot between comfort and storage. Despite its 20L capacity, it was perfect for running, sitting flush against my back without bouncing or riding up when I was on the move. The hideaway waist straps also provided extra support and a secure fit under heavier loads. It opens up flat and fits everything you need for a day in the office – including a laptop, a change of shoes and even your gym kit. It's not the best-looking bag, but it's smart enough for the office.

what to consider when buying a gym bag
Luke Chamberlain

What to Consider When Choosing a Gym Bag

Whether you're looking for a bag that's purely fit for purpose, travelling only from your home to the gym and back again, or perhaps one that won't look out of place in the office as it does in the changing room, or one that can even work as a weekend away bag, here are some factors to consider.

Capacity

Choosing the size of bag you need depends on how and where you intend to use it. If you only need something to carry a water bottle, hoodie and pair of gym shoes, 20 litres should be ample. If, however, you plan to take it to events or travel abroad, then a 45-litre bag might be more appropriate. Styles like the Stubble & Co Kit Bag go all the way up to 65 litres. But consider how practical it would be to lug bulkier bags about on trains, the Tube and aircraft cabins.

Organisation

All well as a spacious main compartment to stash the bulk of your gear, the best gym bags for men will have smart pockets, clever zips and snug padding to store and protect your keys, wallet, laptop and other loose items, so you can move seamlessly between business and leisure.

Durability

You should also look for a bag that’s robust enough to keep pace with your plans. Extra handles are a welcome plus, whether you’re muscling the bag into a locker or onto a busy train carriage – and don’t forget to factor in the size. Too small, and it won’t hold your gear. Too big, and you won’t be able to stash it under your desk or use it as carry-on luggage.

Weather Resistance

You never know when you could get stuck in a downpour, so it's worth paying attention to whether or not your gym bag of choice is waterproof – especially if you're carrying precious cargo, like a laptop. Some brands advertise the waterproof rating of the materials used, often listed in mm, which indicates how many millimetres of water exposure a fabric can withstand before water penetrates it. Most, however, tend to stick to wording like 'weather-resistant'. In which case, you could always pick up a waterproof bag cover to be safe.

Wet Compartments

For swimmers (or heavy sweaters), a wet compartment is a handy addition. If you plan to head to the pool or gym before work, or you commute to the office, storing your wet kit in a separate and secure compartment to your dry clothes will make your pre-work routine run a whole lot smoother.

How to Clean Your Gym Bag

Over time, your gym bag may start to smell. That protein shaker you forgot to clean or, worse still, spilt, the wet swimming shorts that spent a day too long at the bottom of the bag, all these things will add to the unpleasant aroma that can stink out a locker room within seconds. Thankfully, keeping it clean and feeling fresh is a relatively simple task.

Well-made gym bags are designed so you can clean them easily. For most, a regular wipe with a damp cloth or a disinfectant wipe (make sure you check they can be used on all materials) is enough to keep your bag in a respectable condition. If you want to go that little further, however, mixing warm water with white vinegar and, if a change of smell is in order, an essential oil that you like will give you that freshen-up feel you're after.

It's worth noting that some materials may need to be given a bit more attention. Canvas, for example, which can shrink when wet, should always be put on a cold cycle if you're thinking about shoving it in the washing machine drum. Our advice? If you can, spot clean the areas that need a pick-me-up.

If you really want to keep your gym bag in top shape and smelling of roses for as long as possible, make sure you remove sweaty, wet gym gear as soon as you can. Airing it often – after each use if possible – will help blow away that armpit smell from the lining.

Editor's Note

This gym bag guide was last updated in July 2026 to reflect the latest prices and stock. All imagery was refreshed and extra details were added to each product inclusion. I also added the Dirtykit antibacterial bag and Adidas Duffle.
