AS FANS OF movies and television, there are some people we just have to trust. If Martin Scorsese wants three hours of our time for his latest magnum opus, well, guess what—he's earned it, and he's got it. Plenty of our greatest filmmakers—names like Paul Thomas Anderson, Jordan Peele, and Greta Gerwig, among others—have reached the point where we're just going to be on board for what they've got coming, no matter what it is. Their past work has proven it, and they've earned our trust.
There are fewer names of that magnitude on the television side of things, but one who's certainly earned the honor is Vince Gilligan. Gilligan, who cut his teeth writing episodes of '90s sci-fi staple The X-Files, is best known as the man behind two of the greatest shows of the modern TV era: Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. And while he's done (for now) with that particular story of drug kingpin crime, he's not leaving New Mexico for his next one. Pluribus is set in the same region as Gilligan's last couple of projects, but harkens back to his X-Files days for a story with a decidedly sci-fi twist.
Pluribus is the kind of story you're best going into totally blind. Just know that you're in Gilligan's able hands, and hop on in for the ride. But if you need to know a basic premise, know this: It follows a romance writer (Saul star Rhea Seehorn) who's not particularly happy with her life or the work she's doing, and who is then faced with a much, much, much bigger problem involving the entire human race. Pluribus unfolds bit by bit, and it's a slow burn in a way that Gilligan fans will certainly recognize from past projects.
Trust us when we say this: It is unlike anything else you've seen before. This character-driven story will have you dying to see what happens next as it reinvents the thriller and post-apocalyptic story in real time. Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul fans can keep an eye out for some easter eggs, too. It might be a little tricky for these worlds to be entirely connected (considering Seehorn plays two different characters), but there's enough catnip to at least keep the gears in your mind moving. That is, if the basic storyline of Pluribus hasn't already entirely obliterated them.
Below, we've got a full release schedule so you can be sure not to miss a single episode.
