I’M NOT GOING to take all the credit, but I went to Norway for the first time this spring and I don’t think it’s a coincidence the country is doing so well in its first World Cup appearance since 1998—OK, yeah, maybe it has something to do with that Haaland fellow a bit.
I wasn’t there to partake in footy but rather to hike, camp, and of course sauna (and cold plunge) on a fjord with Helly Hansen. The Norwegian brand hosted me and other outdoor journalists to put some of its latest gear through serious paces, and all the pieces we tested were purpose-built for Norway’s rugged conditions—spoiler: They held up and then some. We started out on the western seaboard in Bergen to acclimate and explore the Scandinavian country’s second-largest city. The real adventure got going the next day though, as we headed to the West Norwegian Fjords UNESCO World Heritage Site to set up base camp with Frank Barmen and his team of Norway Mountain Guides.
We got incredibly lucky with the weather, as the day of our big seven-plus-mile hike (with nearly 800 meters of elevation gain) it was sunny and in the 60s—I actually wore shorts and was still warm the whole time. We also had barely any rain, just the evening before we packed up the campsite and headed back to Bergen and then the last hike we did in Rosendal (where we took a ferry from Bergen to). So it was truly a unique gift in one of the most rugged, inspiring, and welcoming countries I’ve been to.
Obviously the gear we tested was crucial to our good time camping and hiking. Here are 15 pieces that got me through the trip. And check out some of my photos below the gear, too.
