AT THIS POINT, there's nothing slowing down the Taylor Sheridan train. The prolific writer/producer who co-created the Yellowstone universe and shepherded Tulsa King, Landman, Mayor of Kingstown and Lioness recently signed a new deal (worth up to $1 billion) with Universal, but that doesn't mean his existing projects with Paramount are going anywhere.
The latest of those to hit the air is The Madison, a new series starring Michelle Pfeiffer and Kurt Russell. While The Madison was originally announced as a sequel series set in the Yellowstone world, it has since been reworked into its own standalone original story.
While Sheridan's shows have a number of different settings and premises—from military special ops to oil production to organized crime—The Madison largely returns to familiar ground. What begins as a story of a family with roots in New York City (Russell's Preston Clyburn works in finance) eventually shifts its primary setting to the countryside and mountains of Montana, where Preston spends a lot of time with his brother, Paul (Matthew Fox), who lives out there full time.
While the legendary movie star Russell and Fox (who, with Lost under his belt, is a bit of a TV legend himself) are welcomed additions to Sheridan's oeuvre, its Pfeiffer who's the main attraction and at the center of everything. She's the longtime wealthy city dweller resistant to spending too much time in the country, where luxury amenities and electronics are at a minimum and there's no indoor plumbing. But, eventually, life calls her out there.
The Madison is ultimately a story of family, relationships, and grief, but it's also focused on characters and realtionships, all while taking a form familiar to anyone who's watched a Sheridan-written show before. There are moments of comedic goofyness, and there are moments of clear social/political speechifying coming from characters mouths. But there are also moments of undeniable excellence for both Pfeiffer and Russell—actors of that stature wouldn't sign on if there weren't.
With frequent shots of the Montana landscapes and countryside, The Madison is a gorgeous watch, but it's not an easy watch. It can get very sad, but in the hands of an actress like Pfeiffer, you feel comfortable taking the ride with her.
