WE JUST MIGHT be in the golden age of video game adaptations. It wasn't long ago that those three words—"video game adaptations"—would make both gamers and film and television fans automatically grimace. But things have changed in the major way as we've made our way into the 2020s. The Last of Us has become a force for HBO, racking up viewers, fans, and acclaim. Movies like The Super Mario Bros. Movie and A Minecraft Movie, while maybe not masterful pieces of art, have totally ruled the box office and helped the film industry remain afloat.
Prime Video's adaptation of Fallout might just be the best of the bunch. Based on the retro-futuristic post-apocalyptic game series of the same name, the first season arrived in the spring of 2024 to much acclaim. Thanks to some excellent production value and a truly fantastic cast—including Yellowjackets breakout Ella Purnell and a star role for the great Walton Goggins even before his stay at The White Lotus—the show proved to be successful at a lot of things all at once. Not only was it a compelling drama, but it was also a fun hangout show where we just wanted to get to know the characters. It was also a conspiracy thriller, where we desperately wanted to get to the bottom of something bigger and quite concerning happening. And, much like the games, it was just a big, well-developed world that we wanted to spend as much time as possible in.
For Fallout season 1, that time was capped at eight episodes. But now, as the show returns for a second season—with Purnell and Goggins returning, along with fellow series regulars Aaron Moten, Moisés Arias, and Kyle MacLachlan, among others—we're more than ready to spend eight more episodes of time getting to see this world, how it works, and what happens within it. Plus. as if you needed any other reason, the second season adds a major name to the cast: Justin Theroux, who plays the sinister capitalist known as Mr. House, taking over the role after the character was introduced late in the first season.
Theroux has starred in HBO's The Leftovers (one of the best shows ever made) and Netflix's Maniac (a really fantastic and underrated limited series) among other projects, so his track record on the small screen should not be overlooked.
As Fallout arrives for season 2 (after a year and a half of waiting), we can already tell this is going to be the kind of show you're going to want to see as soon as possible. The first season was released as a binge, but this time the story will come to us week by week—a real slow burn. So brace yourself, get ready, and make sure you keep up. You don't want to fall too far behind and risk becoming a ghoul.
