CHANGING YOUR LIFE takes real effort. We all live with struggles and obstacles that hold us back. For some of us, there’s eventually a lightbulb moment—when you decide you’re ready to make a change.

If you’re looking for a bit of motivation to help get things going, take a look through some of our inspiring fitness transformations. A theme you might notice: Lots of these guys are dealing with health or life issues outside of their immediate control. At the end of the day, it’s not about what or how much they changed, but that they were strong enough to try at all.

We pulled together some stories of real guys that we’ve published in the past—and the humility, strength, and dedication, of their subjects shines through. Some men have weight loss stories where they lost over 200 pounds. Some guys hit their stride in run clubs or on stationary bikes. Plenty started it all by just taking a walk. And the results speak for themselves. These guys changed how we think about what’s possible. We hope they do for you, too.

Tony Varilly-Alvarado

Person wearing a 'Voter' sticker in a park.

“With my history of health problems, my cardiologist insisted I needed to lose weight. He put me in touch with a cardiometabolic specialist, who concurred. I understood then that if I didn’t take action, there was a good chance I wouldn't live a long life.

I learned to focus on how tasty the food I could eat was, instead of lamenting the lack of foods like bread, pasta, and rice in my diet. The little devil on my shoulder who whispered bad food ideas into my ear went poof!”

“The trainers at Ultimate Performance pushed me to my limits. I found the training tough at first. Still, I kept coming back. Maicka Bamba [personal trainer] and I reviewed my progress and body composition frequently, and made adjustments based on the results. When I started to see and feel progress, I was motivated to push myself even more!”

Muscular man posing with flexed arms in a home setting.

“Before, I’d never paid attention to calories, but I dramatically changed my portion sizes by weighing my food and tracking macros. I also made sure I was drinking plenty of water.

In terms of exercise, I didn’t try to overhaul everything at once. I started walking daily. Once I built momentum, I added resistance training.”

Bradlee Allen

Man performing a gym exercise using rings.

“My transformation took eight months. I approached it by starting to build structure and discipline—making exercise as non-negotiable as working or brushing my teeth. I focused on walking 10,000 steps every day, and getting 6 to 8 hours sleep every night.”

Charles O’Byrne

Person holding a dessert designed to resemble the American flag.

“I started doing two workouts a day on a stationary bike along with upper body exercises like curls, military presses, and bent rows. It was so tough. When I played football in college, I could squat 650 and bench press 350—but I was no longer that guy. It was a hard truth to swallow. Still, I accepted who I was and didn’t let it stop me from working to build muscle. Now I can say, hey, I’m a muscular guy!”

Ludovic Zamor

Man in formal attire with arms crossed.

“I knew from the beginning that this wasn’t going to be an instant gratification process. My goal was incremental growth. The steady fuel, the thing that truly got me through the journey, was discipline. On the days when discipline alone wasn’t enough, I would remind myself of how I felt at my lowest: that was the version of me I refused to ever be again.”

“I belong to my local run club—big shout-out to the Rutherford Runners! I run with them 3 to 4 times a week. Up until the end of August, I was exclusively using the treadmill, but now I love running outside. The cherry on top was running the NYC Marathon this year for the charity Summit Health Cares.”

“After I lost that 100 pounds, I no longer cared about anyone else’s opinion. I realized I was exactly who I always thought I could be.

Boxing gave me that mental clarity. It forced me to confront who I was and helped me rebuild my identity on my own terms. It also led me to some impressive wins.”

Kevin Gendreau

Transformation showcasing a professional in medical attire and casual wear.

“I learned a lot about what it means to be healthy. Progress and consistency always trump perfection. Food quality matters more than quantity. Ultra processed carbohydrates and refined sugars were driving my hunger, inflammation, and constant cravings. Movement does not need to be extreme to be effective.”

Michael Chamberlain

Muscular man standing with hands on hips.

“I went from 184.3 pounds and 18.8 percent body fat down to 172.4 pounds and 10.25 percent body fat. I found the development of my muscles in my legs helped support my joints when I was climbing up to Mount Everest base camp, and in particular when I was descending (since it puts a lot of strain on the legs.) I was more confident coming down, and I think that was partly because I had extra muscle supporting my joints on the descent.”

Lamorne Morris

Person performing a bicep curl exercise in a gym.

The key was cooking for myself whenever I could. But, I'm always moving around a lot. So [when I'm eating out], I would order some of the most basic foods you could find. And, I'm not going to lie to you—it was miserable at first, but I kind of got used to it.”

Before and after transformation showcasing fitness progress.

My quality of life started to deteriorate when I looked around and realized— I didn’t look like the other guys. I got extremely insecure and started drinking more to cope. I began fighting a downhill battle with my self-image.
