The Best Moisture-Wicking Underwear for Men, Tested by Editors
Stay cool, calm, and collected...down there.
I WORK OUT at least four to five times a week, and between lifting sessions, runs along the Hudson, and my 40-minute commute into the city, I’ve learned very few things can derail your comfort than a bad pair of underwear. And because some of them can trap heat, stay damp, bunch up or leave you feeling like you’re sitting in your own pool of sweat, I’m picky about moisture-wicking underwear. If you’re new here, the best moisture-wicking underwear uses performance-minded fabrics (nylon, modal, microfiber blends) that pull sweat away from your skin and dry quickly before moisture can build up.
Over the past three years, I’ve tested dozens of boxer briefs alongside the Men’s Health team, to separate the flimsy skivvies to the sweat-fighting champs. Together, we’ve worn them through heavy leg days, treadmill intervals, cross-country flights, and brutally humid New York summers. Luckily in our discovery, we’ve found pairs that stay comfortable, dry, and supportive from the moment you put them on until you finally peel them off at night. If your current underwear leaves you feeling swampy, overheated, or constantly adjusting yourself, it’s probably time to start upgrading with these options.

What to Consider
When you're shopping for moisture-wicking underwear, there are a few key things to keep in mind. First and foremost, make sure the label says "moisture wicking underwear" loud and clear. You don't want to end up with regular undies that'll leave you feeling all damp and uncomfortable during your workouts.
Fabric
Look for materials like polyester, nylon, model, or microfiber blends with spandex for stretch. These are designed to pull moisture away from the skin and dry quickly—way better than cotton. Ventilation zones or mesh panels come in clutch for airflow, especially around hot zones like the inner thighs and back. The more your skin can breathe, the drier (and cooler) you’ll stay.
Fit and Support
A good pair should stay in place without riding up or bunching. A supportive pouch helps keep everything secure and separated, reducing friction, chafing, and discomfort.
Inseam Length
3-Inch Inseam
This length is best for guys who like less coverage or wear shorter shorts. It offers a modern, athletic cut without a lot of fabric—great for everyday wear and low-impact movement. This underwear may ride up during high-intensity workouts or longer runs.
5-Inch Inseam
This is the everyday sweet spot. Right between short and long, the 5-inch inseam is perfect if you want solid thigh coverage without extra fabric. It’s long enough to prevent ride-up and chafing, but still sleek under slim jeans or workout shorts. Ideal for daily wear, light training, and anything in between.
6-Inch Inseam
This is the Goldilocks inseam. This length works because it’s long enough to prevent chafing, short enough to stay invisible under most pants and shorts. Ideal for workouts and daily wear alike.
How We Selected
Our team of writers, led by Style Director Christian Gollayan, put dozens of pairs through real-world testing because no matter how great a fabric sounds on paper, it has to prove itself during workouts, long commutes, hot summer days, and even lazy Sundays on the couch. We wore these boxer briefs and trunks in a range of situations—from high-intensity interval training to outdoor runs, red-eye flights, and 10-hour desk days. We paid close attention to how well each pair managed sweat, how breathable the fabric felt, and whether it stayed comfortable throughout the day. We also tested for fit, stretch, odor control, and how well the underwear held up after multiple washes.
We prioritized performance-driven materials like polyester, nylon, and modal blends, especially when paired with mesh panels, cooling gussets, or anti-chafe design details. But just as important was how each pair felt because no one wants to wear high-tech underwear that feels stiff, rides up, or looks like gym gear. Finally, we considered versatility and value. The best moisture-wicking underwear should work just as well under your office trousers as it does under your gym shorts. Bonus points went to brands that nailed that everyday-wear sweet spot without skimping on innovation.
How Do Moisture-Wicking Fabrics Work?
Moisture-wicking underwear is designed with synthetic fabrics like polyester, nylon, and spandex to handle wetness better than traditional materials. These fabrics have tiny spaces in knit or mesh that allow moisture to move through, evaporating quickly. So, when you sweat wearing moisture-wicking underwear, it moves to the outer layer, avoiding fabric saturation and skin dampness.
Synthetic materials are better at moisture-wicking as they not only pull sweat moisture away from the skin, but they also dry quickly and don’t hold onto moisture. These fabrics are ideal in exercise clothes, as they can keep you more dry and comfortable during workouts than traditional materials.
Cotton, on the other hand, while it can absorb sweat and moisture from the skin, it is more likely to hold onto the moisture and not dry as quickly, leaving the sweat in prolonged contact with the skin. Although, some cotton fabrics may be specially treated to make them moisture wicking.
