This Is Still the Best Water Bottle We've Ever Tried
It’s not even close. Here’s why.
YOUR WATER BOTTLE is an expression of yourself. Sure, you're buying the thing for its functionality and design, but you’re also buying into what the water bottle represents. Whether you’re in need of an all-metal wide mouth for outdoor trekking, an insulted squeeze bottle for home gym power hours, or a smart water bottle that can track your daily intake, we've got the best water bottle to fit your hydration needs below.

Most importantly, you're buying a water bottle to nourish your body and give it the liquid it requires. Now, precise water intake depends on the person and how active they are. We do know that it's not always easy to throw back the H20, but the benefits are many and there are easy tricks to drinking more water, which will only benefit the body. Having a high-functioning, reusable water bottle you enjoy using will keep you high functioning as well.
As a study last year found, most adults are not getting enough in terms of daily water intake. That may seem trivial, and perhaps even equate to less trips to the bathroom, but there are real health concerns there. Proper hydration can reduce the risk of disease and injury, aid with recovery, and much more. So, let us embrace making it as easy as possible to get the right amount of water we all need.
How We Selected
To say these bottles were tested is an understatement. Over the course of several years, myself and various Men's Health editors put them to work—like, overtime. We paired them up with the most active members of our team, allowing us to get a clean picture of just how well these bottles perform. Hot weather, cold weather, in the gym, out on the trail, on the saddle of a bike, on plane rides, or just commuting; we brought them everywhere.
Throughout the process, we paid close attention to various attributes. Obviously, we wanted a water bottle that looks good. But more importantly, we wanted a water bottle that made staying hydrated easy, thoughtless, and perhaps even enjoyable. We analyzed design, material, size, and special features. We waded through reputable reviews and talked up insiders in the outdoors recreation and sporting worlds for their takes. And of course, we looked at price.
In the end, the Yeti has won us over on all fronts. Durable, lightweight, packable, and super affordable, it has been a favorite among many testers since it released in 2022. But several others came close, offering different traits like filtration, improved insulation, or more sophisticated lids. When we reached the finish line, 10 bottles crossed it with us.
What to Consider
Spout Design
Some people prefer wide-mouth tops on their water bottles for faster drinking, while others prefer a spout design that's much smaller and easier to sip. Really it comes down to preference, but there are spout designs we tested that are more enjoyable to drink from than others. Do keep in mind that lots of companies make tops that are interchangeable in case you want to switch to a different design.
Material
To avoid any contamination of plastics, most water bottles we reviewed came in a metal design. There are some plastic water bottles we tested, however, that were BPA-free and we found to not have any impact on taste. Our top-tested water bottle from Yeti is actually made from BPA-free plastic. Our editors have tested this water bottle for nearly two years and have found no issues with taste or with material breakdown from a dishwasher.
Material also dictates temperature retention, with things like double-insulated stainless steel keeping things nice and chilled for long periods of time. Plastic tends to not insulate quite as well, but can be quite durable (and recycled). Keep this in mind as you weigh how important an ice-cold pull of water is to you.
Capacity
How much water are you going to need? Capacity is a vital consideration, as you might just be looking for a little hydration while at work (where you can continue to refill when necessary) or be out and about all weekend at the campground, potentially away from a water source. Less volume is just fine for quicker outings or when you want to be streamlined, like on a bike. But you'll be wanting additional capacity for, say, lengthy conferences, road trips, or exhausting workout out routines.
Weight
A full water bottle shouldn't be a burden to carry. We made sure to select water bottles with a comfortable weight to walk with, whether that's a short stroll around the neighborhood or a much longer trail hike.
Special Features
There are a few water bottles we selected thanks to special features our editors love. Lifestraw, for example, provides some of the best water filtration you can buy. The fact Lifestraw discretely hides its filter behind a stainless steel body is a huge reason why we featured it on our list. The same goes for the Camelbak Podium, as its insulated body and cap and spout design make it especially suitable for indoor gym settings.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a Reusable Water Bottle Better for the Environment?
Yes. A reusable bottle is easier on the planet for that very reason—it's reusable. Single use plastic is wasteful stuff and, worse, it does not decompose, likely ending up in the ocean and your food supply chain (not to mention turning into microplastic). Going with a bottle like the ones listed here does require some energy and inputs upfront, but because it's your long term bottle (don't go losing it now), the carbon footprint is less.
You can take it a step further by purchasing a bottle made with responsibly-sourced materials, sometimes even made from up-cycled or recycled materials. Look for non-BPA (a bad chemical) options and preferably ones that use very little if no plastic. Glass and stainless steel are generally easier on Mother Earth. And be good to yourself by keeping the thing clean and sterile.
How Do I Clean My Water Bottle?
Here's the thing about mold: It likes wet environments. You know, like inside of your water bottle. It's a repulsive thought, but some of that gunk buildup in your vessel might just be mold. Don't fret, you can clean the thing.
Now, it would take a fair amount of mold to sicken the average person but regardless, a clean water bottle is just worth having. Wash your bottle daily, either in the dishwasher if it's permitted or by hand, ideally with hot water and a scrub to get into those nooks and crannies—water bottle brushes are a great tool.
Occasionally, consider a more intense clean. Do to the bottle like you might to your coffee maker, soaking it in a mix of vinegar and water. Even the occasional boiling water soak will help keep the bottle pristine.
