The Best No and Low-alcohol Spirits, Beers and Wines for Any Occasion

Looking for a good craft lager without the hit of booze? Reminiscent of a German Pilsner with hoppy notes and a dry malt finish, this is an excellent option for a refreshing and full-flavoured 0.5% beer, courtesy of M&S.

We’re big fans of Beavertown here at Men’s Health, and this low-alcohol beer impressed across the board with its ripe tropical fruit flavour and well-balanced bitterness.

Our worthy winner uses a Pilsner base (for an authentic, full mouthfeel), while azacca and citra hops add a fresh, piney dimension.

Brewdog Punk AF opens with bags of fresh tropical fruit flavour and a more subtle pine note. In terms of style, our panel felt this offered the best of both worlds, combining the fruity bitterness you’d expect of an IPA with all the freshness of a lager.

Made by dry-hopping mosaic, citra and amarillo hops (a unique process for extracting more flavour, yet less alcohol), Brooklyn Special Effects is full of authentic, hoppy flavour, malty sweetness and lasting bitterness. Its low carb count makes it a smart bet for your belly, too.

The fruit flavours were more pronounced here than our testers were expecting, but they enjoyed the floral peach hit; big and juicy with touches of bitterness and acidity for balance. Drink chilled in the sun (or, you know, with the heating on) and your favourite salty snacks.

By using the same Nostrana dell’Isola maize as the original, Peroni Libera achieves the same clean citrus flavour – minus the alcohol. An excellent go-to in all weathers, racking up just 73 calories per bottle.

A worthy stand-in for the higher alcohol original, San Miguel’s 0% alternative delivers the same initial crisp hoppy flavour with well-balanced bitterness and a sweet, cereal aroma. Serve chilled at the end of a long day/week/year.

This is a very light Belgian blond non-alcoholic beer with floral aromas, flavours of lemons, straw and apples, and a slightly bitter finish. Testers found the mouthfeel a little thin compared to other low-alcohol beers but enjoyed the lively carbonation and frothy head.

Made in Scotland, taking inspiration from the historic city of Edinburgh, this alcohol-free dark spirit makes a great alternative to Scotch, and our testers loved the intense fiery flavours of root ginger with cinnamon and rosemary.

Serve neat, in a ginger old fashioned with a twist of orange peel, or as a warming hot toddy.

Despite being zero sugar, Caleno impressed our panel with its big tropical fruit flavour, with notes of toasted pineapple, coconut, cardamom and ginger.

To serve, we’d recommend topping with quality ginger beer and a squeeze of lime for a feel-good take on the Dark & Stormy.

If you prefer your drinks on the sourer side, then get a bottle of Atopia Spiced Citrus on your bar trolley ASAP.

A natural distillate of orange, juniper, coriander, angelica and lemon, this mouth-puckering alcohol-free spirit is best enjoyed with tonic, though it makes a great base for a low ABV martini or Tom Collins.

When nothing but a classic G&T will do, this alcohol-free Tanqueray (which uses the same key botanicals as the original for an authentic gin flavour) will scratch that itch.

The initial citrus flavour is followed by floral notes and a slight peppery heat, which effectively mimics the warming sensation of drinking a higher ABV spirit. Genius if you ask us.

With flavours of Seville oranges, orange blossom, lemons and juniper, this bitter-sweet and slightly peppery alcohol-free gin really reminded our testers of its alcoholic counterpart. Add to a non-alcoholic gin mimosa or sip neat on the rocks.

A bitter aperitif that really hits the mark – no sickly sweetness here, thank you – Botivo is your go-to grown up non-alcoholic spirit. With long-lasting bitterness and herbal flavours reminiscent of a classic amaro, pour over ice with a wedge of fresh orange and top up with soda water.  

Founded by Made in Chelsea alumnus, Spencer Matthews, Clean Co’s repertoire currently spans convenient pre-mixed cans and a whole host of non-alcoholic spirits, including Clean T (a tequila alternative) and Clean R (a rum alternative).

It was the Clean V that proved the biggest hit with our panel, combining the clean minerality of a classic vodka with crisp apple sweetness and warming cinnamon. Top with a sparkling kombucha (like Lo Bros ginger and lemon) for a feel-good 5pm serve.

A very convincing alcohol-free cab sav, according to our expert panel. It’s made using spinning cone technology to de-alcoholise the wine, which means there’s no compromise on the red fruit flavour and acidity of a classic cabernet – minus the alcohol and roughly half the calories.
