IT WAS A long, long, loooooong wait, but those who’ve practiced patience have been rewarded, as Euphoria returned for a third (and final) season that totally changed itself up. In the four years since HBO’s chaotic teen drama was last on the air, three of its major stars—Zendaya, Jacob Elordi, and Sydney Sweeney—have become among the biggest movie stars on the planet. In the time off-screen, then, their characters (and their lives) have changed quite a bit. When we pick up with Euphoria’s third season, it’s no longer a teen drama, but rather, well, sort of a little bit of everything drama.

Rue (Zendaya) is now a drug mule, regularly crossing the border in order to pay off debts. Nate (Elordi) and Cassie (Sweeney) are now living an idyllic suburban life… one that neither seems particularly happy in (We’re already sensing shades of Blue Velvet or, funny enough, HBO’s recent suburban malaise drama DTF St. Louis). And the story only gets more and more chaotic from there.

While not the entire cast returns—fellow ascending stars Barbie Ferreira and Austin Abrams have moved on, while Angus Cloud unfortunately passed away back in 2023—plenty do. Colman Domingo, who plays Rue’s sponsor Ali and has himself become an Oscar nominee, is back. So is Alexa Demie, who plays Maddy, Hunter Schafer, who plays Jules, and Maude Apatow, who plays Lexie. Eric Dane, who died due to complications of ALS earlier this year, also made his return, having filmed scenes prior to his passing.

New characters enter the mix as well. Lexie has a job working with a TV show run by a new character played by Sharon Stone. Lost alum Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje plays a dangerous operator of strip clubs whom Rue gets involved with (and Barry star Darrell Britt-Gibson and NFL legend Marshawn Lynch play his hired muscle). Even newcomer Homer Gere (son of Richard) has a role intertwining with Lexi, Maddy, and Cassie as a TV star.

Which is all to say… there’s a lot going on. Euphoria embraces Quentin Tarantino-style action and neo-western tendencies in its third season, while eventually transforming into something of a revenge thriller story (trust us, you’ll get there). All of this, as always with Euphoria, looks incredible; creator Sam Levinson followed the trend set by movies like The Brutalist and One Battle After Another and shot the entire season on striking, colorful, highly cinematic film stock. Elordi himself clarified that it’s not traditional VistaVision like those two movies—but it looks damn close.

All in all, it’s a one-of-a-kind watch. If you’re into this kind of thing, well, it’s time to get binging.
