MH Editors Pick Their Favorite New Spring Running Gear to Hit Your Miles

The gear that we stand by on the road and the track.

AFTER A SEEMINGLY endless winter and a bit of teasing, spring is finally here, and while it can be fun to a winter warrior, out in the elements, pushing through the cold, I am of the belief that running is more fun with a little warm sun on the face and a refreshing breeze on the face.

For treadmill runners, you’re likely long-tired of looking at the same four walls in your garage gym, living room, or basement by now. If you’re like me, you’re ready to breathe new life into your workout by heading outdoors and taking advantage of the longer, sunnier days.

MH-Approved Spring Running Gear

Winter running usually means a lot of bulky layers and technical fabrics, while your spring cardio wardrobe should be lighter in both material and color.

To help make that transition easier, we’ve selected the best spring running gear, tested by me and my fellow Men’s Health editors. These pieces will help you maximize your gains before, during, and after your next training session. And give you that little extra spring in your step.

Senior Gear Editor Ryan Brower enjoys this lightweight and comfortable new running shoe from Skechers. “The H-wing carbon plate provides snap and guidance, giving you that stability as well as energy return,” he says. “This is a great shoe for overpronators like myself.”

I was also able to test this shoe with a few light runs with my daughter, and in addition to being featherlight, the white and orange colorway gives a perfect spring vibe.

One of the benefits of our Best Overall Fitness Tracker and Heart Rate Monitor is the ability to switch out the band for seasonal styling, in addition to top-tier health tracking. You might have read our story with Rory McIlroy, who wore the Links green band during his win at The Masters. The Whoop also brings the ability to track the improvements to your VO2Max, which is a major focus in my training, as it is for many other runners.

Deputy Editor Paul Kita has found these running shorts to be an ideal spring wear, due to their lightweight material and comfortable cut. For the quality of the short, they are an excellent pick that will last you through the season and look great. Brooks knows what its doing when it comes to training gear, which is why the brand is constantly at the top of our gear guides.

I’ve been a fan of these sleek, lightweight crew necks since Dick’s first dropped the VRST clothing line. The sporting company is well-versed in making moisture-wicking, cool shirts, which are great for spring. That, on top of more color varieties than you are going to get from any other brand. For the quality, you can’t best the price, which is I’ve voted them our Best Value pick in our Best Workout Shirts guide.

Senior Fitness Editor Brett Williams, NASM, has been rocking these sporty specs from Adidas since picking them up during his training for the Boston Marathon. “They've got photochromic lenses, which means they get darker in the sun,” he says. “I feel like I've found the perfect halfway point between performance sunglasses and a lifestyle frame I'm eager to wear everywhere I go.”

Like most Vuori gear, the fit and aesthetic are impeccable. The lighter colorways are the perfect fit for the season. This running jacket looks great on the body without you feeling constrained, so you can run free. It’s the perfect jacket for me to throw on during quick runs to my local park, where I do my bodyweight sessions.

It’s always important to get your water in, but as the weather gets warmer we lose more through sweat. Whether you are a road runner, trail runner, or power walker, this HydraPak water bottle is a great tool to stay hydrated. The value can’t be beat, with a comfortable strap and sleek design.

I’ve been using these open-ear bone conduction headphones since they were released and have found them to be a game-changer for running outside. We recently did a story about why open-ear headphones are a must for my fellow outdoor cardio enthusiasts, and this orange colorway from Shokz is the perfect spring pick-up. They are lightweight, hold a charge, and most importantly, sound great.
