The Best Polo Shirts for Men, Tested by Style Editors

We recommend shirts from Lacoste, J. Crew, and Ralph Lauren.

AS A STYLE Editor who gets paid to wear-test clothes, I still want fits that are low-effort, high reward. So come summer, the polo shirt becomes my default. It’s the sartorial sweet spot between a dress shirt and T-shirt, so you can easily throw one on and immediately look put together, even if you’re just chasing errands. The best polo shirts for men should work with a variety of fits, from formal to business casual, which means they can be easily dressed up or down. For more casual options, we recommend they feature performance features—like moisture-wicking materials or stretchy elastane—to keep you comfortable when you're on the move. And with menswear brands rethinking the classic style, our list offers everything from crisp office-ready knits to retro, open-collar styles that lean more laid-back than country club.

Best Polo Shirts for Men

What to Consider

Fabric

When you’re shopping for a polo, the fabric does most of the heavy lifting because it dictates how it feels, breathes, drapes, and even how dressed-up it looks. Here’s the best fabrics to consider.

Pique Cotton

This is the OG polo fabric—the slightly textured, waffle-like knit you’ll recognize from brands like Lacoste and Ralph Lauren. It’s breathable, holds its shape well, and has that sporty, heritage vibe. The texture also helps hide sweat a bit better than smoother fabrics. Great for everyday wear, golf, and anything casual.

Jersey Cotton

If you want something that feels broken-in from day one, this is it. Jersey polos are smooth, lightweight, and drape closer to the body—basically a polo that wears like your favorite tee. The tradeoff: they can look a little more casual and may lose structure over time. Perfect for laid-back fits and layering.

Performance Blends

Usually a mix of polyester, elastane, or nylon, these are built for movement. Think moisture-wicking, quick-drying, and stretchy. Ideal for golf, travel, or hot days—but they can skew more athletic than polished, depending on the design.

Merino Wool

Lightweight merino polos are a sleeper hit. They’re naturally breathable, temperature-regulating, and resist odor, which makes them clutch for travel or long days. They also drape clean and look elevated. Downside: pricier and requires a bit more care. Worth it if you want a polo that feels grown-up.

Linen

When it’s brutally hot, you want to turn to linen polos because they’re airy, lightweight, and offer that slightly rumpled texture that screams vacation. The catch: they wrinkle easily and can feel less structured. Best for beachy or off-duty fits.

Fit

A shirt's ideal fit depends on the style. For dressier polos, our experts recommend a streamlined silhouette that's slim (but not tight) to show off your upper physique, and a tapered short sleeve that still lets your guns breathe. For more casual shirts (like sweater polos), we recommend a boxier, more relaxed fit that's breezy, but still stylish. Overall, the best polo shirt should touch your body from shoulder to waist without binding. And a faux pas for the polo shirt's fit is that it should never fit too loose. After all, no one wants a shirt that looks like it's swallowing you up.

How We Selected

We’ve been updating this guide since 2017 and, in that time, have tested well over 100 polo shirts across a wide range of brands—from heritage names like Lacoste and Ralph Lauren to premium labels like Cos and Suitsupply. Every polo featured here has been worn and evaluated by our fashion team, including Style Editor Joseph Cheatham and Style Director Christian Gollayan.

We assessed each shirt on three core pillars: fit, comfort, and versatility—but went deeper within each. For fit, we looked at how the polo sits through the shoulders, chest, and arms, whether it runs true to size, and how well it maintains its shape after repeated washes. For comfort, we looked at how breathable it feels in heat, how well it layers in cooler temps, and whether it allows for a full range of motion without clinging or restricting. We also paid close attention to texture and weight, noting which fabrics feel substantial versus lightweight and how that impacts you wearing it for hours.

Versatility played a part, meaning polos that can be worn to the office, to dinner, or over the weekend. That also means how easily each shirt pairs with everything from tailored trousers to denim or shorts. We also tested across a range of body types and personal style preferences. In the end, we arrived at this list with the best polo shirts for men that you can buy right now.

Lacoste Original Piqué Polo Shirt

Pros

  • Made with pique cotton that creates a breathable honeycomb texture
  • Available in tons of colors
  • Flattering fit
  • Looks great with jeans, chinos, or shorts
  • Ideal for casual wear or tennis

Cons

  • A little costly

Over the past four years, I’ve tested more than 25 different polos from a number of brands, but Lacoste’s pique shirt reigns supreme. For over nine decades, this cotton polo has been a mainstay in the fashion game, blending its tennis roots with everyday style for guys who want to perform on the court and equally look great at the office (or happy hour). With its signature crocodile-logo and knitted fabric, it’s one of the most recognizable polos spotted on the likes of Adrien Brody, Tom Selleck, and even tennis champion, Novak Djokovic.

The original design has a slim fit, cutting close in the arm area with a straight-but-tailored drape. Guys with bigger builds and biceps might want to size up as it can run small. It’s not your average polo. Lacoste uses petit pique cotton, a specially woven fabric that creates a breathable, honeycomb texture with stretch and structure that won’t give out after a few wears. Yes, the material is on the lighter side, but the production cost of this cotton is much higher than your standard cotton, meaning the quality is ten times better.

I’ve been wearing this polo since my college days at Howard University, and it still feels just as fresh as it did back then. When I wear it, I always feel cool, even if the temps have spiked to the 80s. In terms of styling, I typically wear it with blue jeans, but will pair it with shorts in the dog days of summer. You can find it in a bunch of colors, but this dark wine-red shade creates a luxurious, elegant vibe that not many sport-inspired polos offer. Sure, $100 might seem steep for a polo shirt, but consider it money well invested. From its rich heritage and durable construction to timeless style, Lacoste’s polo deserves a spot in your spring-summer wardrobe.

Pros

  • Stretch fabric and roomy fit
  • Timeless style
  • UPF 50 for extra sun protection
  • Comes in a bunch of colors

Cons

  • N/A

We'd be remiss not to include Ralph Lauren, one of the OG makers of polo shirts. And the beauty of owning one of these shirts: you know it'll never go out of style. We especially love Polo Ralph Lauren's Performance Shirt, which takes the brand's classic polo and infuses it with athleisure features like stretch fabric, a breathable knit, and UPF 50 for extra sun protection.

I’ve worn this just about everywhere, from the links, to barbecues, and everywhere in between and found that it looks great in just about any casual setting. Plus, I love its roomy fit, which is back in style and works for a range of body types. It’s available in lots of colors, but the navy feels the most classic and versatile enough to pair with cream chinos or blue jeans. It’s also one of those polos that looks sharp, whether it’s tucked in or left to hang.

Amazon Essentials Polo Shirt

Pros

  • Breathable
  • Flattering fit

Cons

  • Not the stretchiest fit

I wasn't expecting much from a $14 polo, but this Amazon bestseller punches way above its weight. The slim fit is clean and flattering on a bunch of body types, and the cotton fabric feels surprisingly breathable, even on muggy days. It doesn't have the added stretch you'd get from spandex or elastane, but I still found it cozy enough for weekend errands and office commutes.

The best part? It comes in so many colors that you could easily stock up on a spring-summer rotation for the cost of a fancy dinner. I've paired it with chinos, jeans, even shorts, and it looked great with all of them. Sure, you wouldn't train or play sports in it, but for day-to-day looks, it's a solid move.

Pros

  • Won't make you sweat in hot temps
  • Straight, roomy fit feels comfortable
  • Waffle-like thermal stitch gives it texture

Cons

  • Air dry to maintain best shape

Banana Republic designed a soft-yet-durable sweater polo bridges the gap between casual and formal wear, earning a spot in our lineup. Our Grooming Editor Sean Zucker loves to wear this one to the office on days when he has dinner plans after clocking out. He can tuck into dress pants and pair the fit with loafers for a put-together look. The fabric is made with a waffle-like thermal stitch that gives texture and retro vibes. It feels comfortable and light, even on days when outside starts to heat up.

Thanks to the straight, roomy fit, Zucker doesn’t feel too suffocated. On laundry day, he tossed it in the washer, which kept it looking fresh, but he recommends letting it air dry to avoid shrinkage. Whether you want a regular fit or tall sizing, Banana Republic has options that make it easy to nail a polished look without trying too hard.

Bonobos Hudson Sweater Polo

Pros

  • Super soft and breathable
  • Flattering on athletic builds
  • Available in a bunch of colors and patterns

Cons

  • Avoid putting it in the dryer

Full disclosure: Our Style Director Christian Gollayan owns seven of these, and wears one of them at least twice a week during the summer. That's because the cotton knit is super soft yet breathable, and the trim cut around the chest and arms is super flattering. No surprise this was named after Rock Hudson. It has a matinee-idol vibe, and I've received countless compliments when wearing it around town. Bonobos cranks these out in a bunch of colors and patterns, so you could build your whole summer rotation around this one polo. The price is fair, the quality holds up, and people will notice. Just skip the dryer if you want to keep the original fit.

Cos Slim Merino Wool Polo Shirt

Cos Slim Merino Wool Polo Shirt

Pros

  • Premium, luxe quality
  • Merino wool material is super soft and lightweight
  • Temperature-regulating
  • Wearable year-round

Cons

  • Dry clean

Cos is one of my favorite menswear brands, especially for clothing that feels premium enough wear to a museum opening or fancy dinner. Take this slim-fit pool shirt that’s a step from your typical long-sleeve. It swaps out the sporty jersey fabric for smooth merino wool, making it read like a luxury knit. The material is softer, finer, and more temperature-regulating than cotton. You might read wool and think it's heavy, but it’s actually lighter than the Banana Republic polo. This is one of the shirts you wear year-round, season after season. Plus, the burgundy color is like the cherry on top, punching it above the basic polos on the market.

It doesn’t feel comfortable in a muggy station, but I’ve found it to be breathable in the city, whether the temps are in the 60-70 range. It avoids the boxy, dad-polo effect and gives a closer fit that skims the body without being too tight. In this case, most body types can rock this option with no issue. You can put it in the washing machine, but it’s best to take a trip to the dry cleaners. Since it has a more polished vibe and will last for some time, those qualities justify the price tag.

Pros

  • Johnny collar makes it stand out
  • Flatters most body types
  • Made with Pima cotton (finest of all cottons)
  • Moisture-wicking

Cons

  • Not ideal if you want traditional button-up style polo

Bugatchi ditched the traditional buttons for a Johnny collar (a split V-neck opening) for a unique, flattering aesthetic. For extra style points, the collar and cuffs have double stripe tipping that’ll make you stand out. Unlike many options we’ve tested, this polo shirt is made with pima cotton, which is the finest cotton out there—thanks to its longer fibers that feel durable and luxurious without piling. The air blue colorway pairs nicely with navy chinos and loafers for a semi-dressy look or shorts for a casual lunch fit.

We also like its relatively slim fit that flatters most body types. In short, this polo will look good for years to come, decreasing your cost per wear. Like some of our favorite menswear essentials, Bugatchi's polo has some performance features. It contains a hint of stretch that moves as well as some of our favorite workout shirts, while its pima cotton is cozy, but breathable. We've worn it during hot afternoon commutes and found that it kept us cooler than most other cotton polos we've tested.

Peter Millar Solid Performance Jersey Polo

Pros

  • Stretchy and breathable
  • Comes in a myriad of shades
  • Four-way stretch, wicking, easy-care benefits and odor-resistant properties
  • UPF 50+ sun protection

Cons

  • Leaner guys should go a size down

Peter Millar built its name on golf shirts, but this one deserves a spot way beyond the fairway. Our editors have worn this on city commutes, business-casual office days, and even for a night out, and it's never felt out of place. That's because it has a classic fit that's super flattering, and it's roomy through the shoulders, which is a win if you've been hitting chest day (though it might be too roomy for leaner guys). I found the polyester-spandex blend has a smooth silky feel that’s not textured or mesh-like. The jersey knit is breathable and stretchy to keep you looking and feeling cool when you're out and about this summer.

One editor wore it out on the greens in 80-degree temps, but the fabric didn’t get soaked. He stayed dry and comfortable despite the sun beaming down on him during all 18 holes. I'm partial to the Petal Purple style, which has a pop of color without looking too loud, but Peter Millar has a whole range of shades if you want to build a rotation. Pair it with travel pants, chinos, or even shorts, and you've got a polished-yet-comfortable uniform.

J.Crew Cotton Racking-Stitch Sweater-Polo
Now 19% Off

Pros

  • Made with cool zigzag pattern
  • Great for cooler weather
  • Relaxed drape lets you layer over tank top

Cons

  • Might be too thick in hotter temps

When temps dip and short sleeves won’t cut it, this J.Crew long-sleeve polo keeps you warm without overheating. Zucker throws it on for dog walks in the evenings and stays comfortable the whole time. The relaxed drape makes it easy to layer a tank top underneath, and it’s forgiving in the stomach—ideal if you’re going hard on burgers. It’s cut close in the arms without strangling your biceps, even if you’re jacked.

The cotton fabric feels thicker than the Cos version, so I’d skip wearing it on blazing summer days, but it’s perfect for cooler weather. Between the stripes and the zigzag-knit pattern, this polo is a beauty. You can rock it to the office or the movies, pairing it with cords or jeans—it works either way.
