I was one of those oddballs with a full beard at 13 years old, have been cutting my own hair since I was in high school, and have had an unruly amount of body hair for as long as I can remember. It’s why I’ve invested so heavily in body groomers, nose hair trimmers, and beard trimmers. But there are a few places I like to go fully bald—namely, my back and shoulders. Body shaving is always a bit more taxing than beard trimming or nose trimming, as it usually involves a lot of repeat movements and finger-crossing so you don’t slice anything. Back shavers are great, but they don’t often get close enough to go full bald. If you’re just looking to tidy up, pubic hair trimmers are perfect; however, they will fail to give a clean shave. And the razors that do are nowhere near gentle enough for me to trust with such delicate work.

Effectiveness
The first thing I took this razor to was my shoulders, and I immediately noticed how gentle it was. I could barely feel the razor and would have worried it wasn’t working if not for the sight of hair filling up the negative space between blades. It feels more like rubbing a piece of plastic across your body than steel blades. While the blades did fill up with hair quickly, which is kind of unavoidable for me, the extra space between blades made it easy to rinse off and keep going. The wider spacing also collected less shaving cream between strokes than most other body razors I’ve tried, and that too was quick to wash off.
The handle is ultra-grippy and I never dropped it, which is an issue I face with body blades as I often use them in the shower. This one is as sturdy as they come and weightless. When I shave my shoulders and neaten up around the top of my chest in the shower, I rarely use shaving cream. With the GilletteLabs Body + Intimate, I faced no irritation from this strategy.
For my back, I obviously had to enlist a helpful friend with no professional grooming experience, and this proved seamless. The first time around, we used cream and it left my back feeling as smooth as I’ve had it without waxing. A few weeks later, when we were each feeling a bit lazier, we shaved it using only water. Other than one tiny ingrown hair, it was spotless. Plus, there were no nicks.
One important thing to note: the adhesive on the back of the shower hanger is legit. Wherever you want to set it up, be sure of the spot before taking the seal off and slapping it on because the glue is strong. I’ve tried everything short of taking a knife to it, and it hasn’t budged an inch. I see this as a good thing, as it will, by all accounts, never fall off the wall I stuck it to. But just be sure: because this is the shower setup equivalent of a tattoo, it’s permanent.
