THE BEST SHORT-SLEEVE button-ups has come a long way from its reputation as the awkward middle child of men’s shirts. Done right, it’s one of the easiest pieces you can throw on in the summer and still look pulled together. The trick is finding one that has a cooling fabric, a great drape, and a flattering fit for your summer gains. As a boy who’s always been into fashion, I’ve been wearing them since I was teenager all the way up to my now early-30s. So I’ve tried everything from crisp cotton poplins to breezy linen blends and drapey resort styles.

Best Men’s Short-Sleeve Button-Up Shirts

What to Consider

Fabric

In the summer, you want breathability first—cotton, linen, or blends that feel airy and don’t trap heat. Linen runs the coolest but wrinkles fast. Cotton is more structured and polished but can get too stuffy if it’s too dense. Then there’s viscose or Tencel blends, which are softer and drapier—perfect for that relaxed, vacation vibe. However, these blends can wrinkle in a rumpled silk way rather than a sharp linen crease.

Fit

Short-sleeve button-up shirts shouldn’t hug you like a dress shirt, but they also shouldn’t swallow you whole. The sweet spot is a relaxed fit that skims the body, which is very much in style right now and being that it’s a classic fit, it’ll still look great years down the line. Sleeves should hit mid-bicep and have a little room—too tight, not flared out like wings. Length-wise, it should hit around mid-fly. A solid option like the Buck Mason camp collar shirt has a clean drape that doesn’t cling, stiffen, or balloon out.

Versatility

The best ones can be worn with shorts, chinos, tailored trousers, maybe even swim trunks and not feel out of place. Bonus points if it works open and over a tank or tee.

How We Selected

In the past year alone, I’ve worn north of 25 short sleeve shirts. I’ve combined my testing with the Men’s Health fashion team, led by Style Director Christian Gollayan, who's been putting them through their paces since 2023. We’ve worn shirts through scorching heat, humidity, long walks, and cross country travel. The first thing we looked at was fabric. If it doesn’t breathe, nothing else matters. The good ones feel light, airy, and don’t stick to your back the second you break a sweat. Fit is equally important. You want your shirt to be relaxed through the chest and sleeves, clean through the body, and a length that works untucked without looking oversized.

We also looked for shirts that aren’t locked into just one vibe, and work with whatever you’ve got on—shorts, chinos, even dressed up a bit. We also paid attention to how they hold up. After a few washes, does it still look good? Does it keep its shape? Or does it turn into something you only wear at home? And yeah, price matters—but only if it earns it. As a whole, we kept coming back to the ones that felt good, looked right, and were easy to throw on without overthinking it.

Cotton Linen Shirt

Pros

  • Looks great with shorts, trousers, and swim trunks
  • Can be worn open or closed
  • Breathable in hot temps
  • Able to go in the washer
  • Affordable enough to stock up on a few colors

Cons

  • Not ideal if you want something cut slimmer

Over the last three years, I’ve tested more than 25 different short-sleeve button-downs, but Uniqlo’s offering stays in rotation. The camp-collar design is clean and minimal, so it’s versatile enough to wear with various bottoms—linen shorts, trousers, or even swim trunks for a beach day. Since the fabrication blends a lightweight cotton-linen, it kept me cool in hot, summer temps. I wore it on vacation in Costa Rica where the weather was as hot as 90 degrees, and the material stayed breathable the whole time. Instead of sticking to my skin or soaking up any sweat like a sponge, the fabric just had that loose, flowy vibe.

The two-way collar can be worn open or closed, depending on your vibe. You can wear it solo or layered over a tank top when the temps fluctuate. The relaxed silhouette is cut roomy through the chest, arms, and shoulders, so it works for all body types. When it comes to caring for this piece, you have to baby it a tad. Yes, it can go in the washer, but hanging it to air dry is your best bet to keep its shape.

Clocking in under $50, this is one of the most affordable options we’ve tested. Like most wallet-friendly items at Uniqlo, this shirt has a premium feel that punches well above its price point. The stitching holds up, the fabric softens over time without losing structure, and it never looks cheap even after multiple washes. Plus, the shirt comes in a number of colors, so you can stock up on a few for casual office fits.

Coofandy Men's Short Sleeve Button Up Shirts

Pros

  • Affordable, under $30
  • Looks great worn out or tucked in
  • Available in a range of colors

Cons

  • Might have to air dry to avoid shrinkage

If you’re trying to get into the short-sleeve button-up game without spending much, I recommend this one from Coofandy. The fabric is thin in a good way—breathable, quick-drying, and built for heat. It’s the kind of shirt you throw on when it’s already 85 degrees outside and you don’t want anything sticking to you. It’s not super fancy, but it stays comfortable even when you’re moving through a full day in the sun. Fit-wise, it leans relaxed through the body with enough room to stay airy. It’s especially flattering on guys who’ve been hitting the weights pretty heavy in the gym. You can wear it out for the office or tucked in for dinner.

Wornwell S/S Camp Shirt

Pros

  • Perfect option for vacation or the office
  • Lightweight enough for sweaty commutes
  • Comes in a variety of stripe patterns
  • Chest pockets adds a bit of functionality

Cons

  • Cut a little close in the arms in case you have big biceps

I love Buck Mason’s striped camp-collar shirt because it feels more elevated than your standard short-sleeve button down. And if you're not familiar, a camp collar, (sometimes called a resort collar) is that open, notch-style collar that lies flat instead of standing up like a traditional dress shirt. It reads more vacation energy, less buttoned-up structure, while still looking sharp.

Rather than having a dull matte finish, this shirt is made with a lightweight washed cotton that leans more lived-in but still very fresh. It’s got a single chest pocket that keeps things classic, and the fit follows suit—easy through the body, but a touch more tailored in the arms than most camp-collar styles, so you don’t get that boxy, oversized sleeve situation.

The fabric is seriously light, too. I’ve worn it on sweaty commutes to the office and didn’t get that clingy, damp T-shirt effect. It somehow stays airy and comfortable even when the temps spike. And if you’re into a little variety, it comes in a handful of stripe patterns, all in that same understated, slightly vintage lane.

Cos Short-Sleeved Cotton Shirt

Pros

  • Holds shape after full day of wear
  • Timeless style
  • Works well on average-height guys (around 5 '10”)
  • Can layer over a t-shirt or tank

Cons

  • Short guys might have to take it to the tailor to get cropped

Most short-sleeve buttons skew casual, but this one from Cos cleans up for dressier occasions. The premium brand understands proportions, so it’s slightly boxy, but still tailored enough that it never looks too oversized. It’s structured with a pointed collar and a box pleat in the back for a classic feel. The cut is roomy through the body and falls a few inches past the waist, which works especially well on average-height guys (around 5 '10”) who want that easy straight hang without it feeling swallowed by fabric. If you’re on the shorter side, though, it’s worth considering a quick trip to the tailor.

It’s made with a crisp cotton that holds its shape, keeping that sharp, just-pressed look even after a full day of sitting at my desk. I found it's one of the few short sleeves I didn’t find myself constantly tugging or adjusting. Fit-wise, it’s relaxed through the body with clean lines and architectural drape. It didn’t cling when I was burning up in 80-degree weather, but it also doesn't billow—ideal if you’ve got broad shoulders or a full torso and want structure without squeeze. Styling is simple: trousers, loafers, and maybe a belt if the shirt stops too low. It’s perfect for a rooftop brunch or summer garden party.

Bonobos Stretch Riviera Short Sleeve Shirt

Pros

  • Tailored, sharp look
  • Great for casual and semi-casual settings
  • Looks slightly wrinkled but adds character

Cons

  • Might want to size up if you have a broader top

Bonobos’ lightweight chambray shirt offers a tailored-but-easy fit that splits the difference between polished and relaxed. Chambray has that denim-meets-dress shirt vibe that works in both casual or semi-dressy settings. I’ve worn mine to a resort dinner as well as a laid-back brunch in the city. The fabric is soft, breathable like linen, and lighter than denim, with that subtle texture that gives your outfit character. If chambray isn’t your thing, this shirt is available in seersucker, linen, and other cool patterns.

It’s one of those shirts that looks slightly wrinkled—which makes it my grab-and-go favorite. The fit is more tailored than the others on this list, but not tight. Bonobos does that “trim but forgiving” thing well, so it works especially nicely on average builds or guys who want a little shape without going into slim-fit territory. If you’re broader up top, you might size up for a more relaxed feel. When it comes to styling, you can wear it like a casual button-up with chinos, or dress it down with shorts.

A&F Resort Shirt

Pros

  • Striped threading details add style points
  • Vacation-ready look
  • Stays airy in scorching heat
  • Plays well with linen shorts or drawstring pants

Cons

  • Wouldn't recommend tucking in

Abercombie’s breezy, drapey camp-collar shirt has that resort-ready look, which is perfect for your next vacation. The cotton blend has striped threading details that add style points, so it feels more elevated than a regular casual button-up. It’s soft, airy, and hangs off the body in that flowy, swishy way. I’m five foot eight, and the fit is cut roomy with a shorter hem, falling at my waist.

You can wear it untucked without looking like you borrowed your dad’s shirt, but I would recommend letting it fall. It works especially well on slimmer to average builds, but the flowy cut also makes it forgiving if you’ve just finished a full meal. Styling-wise, it’s best to pair with linen shorts, drawstring pants, maybe even swim trunks. Leave a couple buttons undone and call it a day.

Gap Relaxed Denim Shirt

Now 22% Off

Pros

  • Lightweight denim material
  • Made with structure and comfort
  • Looks great layered over tank or buttoned up

Cons

  • Not too much stretch, but not stiff either

Gap’s denim short-sleeve delivers a roomy fit that balances structure and comfort. Denim short sleeves can be too stiff or too “mechanic off-duty”, but Gap’s version avoids all of that. The denim here is lighter than you’d expect, almost chambray-adjacent, with that broken-in softness right out of the gate. You still get texture and structure, but without the weight or rigidity of traditional denim. After a few wears, it molds to your body in a way that feels lived-in like your favorite tee.

Similar to Cos’ classic button up, this fit has more room through the chest and sleeves. That makes it especially good for bigger builds or guys with thicker arms—it doesn’t pinch or pull. On slimmer frames, it’s oversized in a cool, casual way. I wouldn’t try wearing this option to a fancy dinner, but it can shine at a beer hall or baseball game. Throw it on with black jeans, white tees, even chinos. It’s basically a substitute for your go-to overshirt, just summer-ified.
