GETTING FITTED FOR clubs is pricey, and in most people’s cases, not entirely worth it. Spoiler alert: Golf is a very expensive hobby. And if you’re just starting, it only gets worse from here. But even our top set of golf clubs for beginners runs you around $1,5000 (on a good day). There are some workarounds, though.

Amazon has a surprisingly robust selection of clubs, and they’re typically cheaper than you’d find at a Golf Galaxy or Dick’s. I’ve bought a few clubs off Amazon myself through gift cards and reward points, and it’s saved me hundreds, if not thousands, over the years. A lot of clubs oftentimes go on sale, especially the previous year models.

I tried to get a little creative here and provided some surefire options to build a golf bag for under $1,000. One thing to note—if you buy everything on this list, you will obviously spend well over $1,000. But with the right combo, you also spend a lot less. You can thank me later.

Getting a full set of irons for udner $600 brand-new is a tall task these days. That’s typically the price you’d find on Facebook Marketplace for a used set. The Callaway Rogue ST Max Irons are currently on sale at Amazon for just over $500, and it’s a deal you’d be remiss to, well, miss. They offer a lot of forgiveness and feature a 17-4 stainless steel face for improved distance. The only downside is there’s no 5-iron, but we offer some workarounds if you keep scrolling.

Putting can make all the difference in the world—drive for show, putt for dough is an adage worth remembering. Cleveland may be known for its wedges, but it makes some pretty great putters, too. The HB Soft 2 Putter is slightly discounted on Amazon, and now’s a great time to upgrade your short game. The face milling helps keep a consistent ball speed, and it’s made to maintain a similarly predictable swing speed each time.

If you’re really looking to hone in your short game, this three-wedge set is a great value bundle. You’re getting a 52, 56, and 60-degree wedge for under $300. I’m no mathematician, but that comes out to under $100 a wedge, which is pretty unheard of for a name brand like Cobra. These actually just came out, and while I typically use Cleveland wedges, you can’t beat this price—you’re essentially getting one wedge for free.

Cobra has really stepped up its driver game in recent years, and now’s a good time to follow suit. The Darkspeed Adapt offers 33 unique loft and lie settings and an enhanced aerodynamic shape for improved swing speed. It’s one of the more forgiving drivers out there, but the best part might be that it’s $50 off on Amazon for a limited time.

Callaway’s Big Bertha line has been around for decades, and it’s been a fan-favorite for just as long. They’re some of the easiest to hit woods out there, and they’re particularly ideal for beginners and weekenders alike. Or, of course, someone who can’t hit a 3-wood to save their life. Right now, the Big Bertha is 5 percent off on Amazon, and for a little over $160, you can nab a wood you can actually take out of your bag.

I have a Callaway Rogue hybrid that gets me out of sticky situations all the time. This 5-wood offers similar versatility, and it’s a great option if you’re looking for a fairway wood for more intermediate distances. It features a powerful face cup for distance striking, and the carbon crown is forgiving and fairly easy to hit—especially for those who hate using a 3-wood. This is the perfect option for those who prefer a smaller face than the notoriously difficult-to-square-up 3-wood.

If you’re a hybrid type of guy, this is another budget-friendly option that’s now nearly 30 percent off. I love hitting my Callaway hybrid when I’m off with the 3-wood, and the Elyte X is an even better option. It features a slightly oversized profile for excellent forgiveness and ball accuracy. If you don’t hit your 3 or 5-wood well—or want to opt for something under $200—this is an excellent alternative.

Finding a good cart golf bag for under $200 can be tough. Ask Echo makes some of the best in the biz, and the T-Lock is now under $200 in select colorways (and in my opinion, the best ones). It features a unique design to keep your clubs from rattling in the back of the cart, and it’s one of the most secure bags out there. It is also loaded with extras: a complementary rain hood, a couple of towel rings, a glove holder, two top handles, six tee holders, a pen sleeve, an umbrella strap, a rear grab handle, a padded shoulder strap, and an ultra-durable cart strap handle.

Best Stand Bag for the Money

TaylorMade Classic Stand Golf Bag

Classic Stand Golf Bag

A stand bag is an essential for those who lhit up the pitch and putts or generally just love to get some extra exercise and walk their rounds. A good one can cost you well over $200—this one included. Right now, though, most colorways are available for just $180. Ditch the old stand bag you got with your starter set and get something that’s durable, lightweight, and comfortable around your shoulder.

e12 Straight Golf Balls

You probably associate Bridgestone with its tires, but they also make some of the best golf balls on the market. The e12 holds up pretty well to the consensus favorite golf ball, the Pro V1, and they’re on sale on Amazon right now for $30, which is almost half the price of the popular Titleists. They’re a little softer and feature a reduced side spin to help eliminate shanks and slices, both good things for beginners or less advanced golfers. Anything that helps.

These are my go-tos. They’re by far the best deal on Amazon at about 10 cents a tee, and they’re strong enough to last you a couple of tee-offs (as long as they’re halfway decent). They’re the number one tee on tour for a reason, and they’re available in counts of 90, 100, 120, 135, and 175. The more you get, the more you typically save.

Now we get into the ancillary stuff. Some of these things are pretty optional, but important, nonetheless. Finding a good rangefinder for under $200 can be tricky; finding one around $100 is almost unheard of. One of the best budget-friendly ones we’ve tested, though, is just under $110, and we’re just as surprised as you are. It’s shockingly accurate, features a range of up to 1,200 yards, and comes with a convenient magnetic mount that attaches to your cart for easy reads.

Callaway’s golf gloves are always reliable, and they’re now at a 90-day low price on Amazon. The brand’s proprietary FUSETECH offers the perfect balance of comfort, durability, and performance. If you’re someone who golfs regularly, you won’t have to change your gloves out every few rounds—these are built to last. We’d consider those baked-in extra savings, in a sense.

Best Golf Towels on Amazon

Handy Picks Microfiber Golf Towel

Microfiber Golf Towel

This is more of an essential, especially if you’re playing in less-than-desirable conditions. Three microfiber towels for $10 sort of says it all—that’s typically around the price of one towel. They’re the number-one-selling golf towels on Amazon with well over 3,000 reviews, and come in three distinct colorways you can swap out. They’re super absorbent, clip right to your bag, and can clean your clubs, golf balls, and sunglasses alike.

Fancy ball markers can be surprisingly expensive, but these $10 ball markers come with a magnetic hat clip and feature an American Flag design that’s a major step up from some of the cheap plastic markers out there. There are also a few other styles to choose from, and you can even mix and match. They’re made out of a premium metal material and will essentially last a lifetime. Not bad for $10.
