I’M NOT HERE to lecture you, but wearing sunscreen every day is one of the smartest things you can do for your skin. Beyond lowering your risk of skin cancer, daily SPF helps prevent wrinkles, dark spots, loss of elasticity, and other visible signs of aging caused by UV exposure. In fact, if you’re serious about preserving your skin long-term, sunscreen is arguably the most effective anti-aging product you can use. The good news is that modern formulas are nothing like the greasy, chalky sunscreens you may remember from childhood. Today’s best facial SPFs are lightweight, comfortable, and easy to wear every day, which is exactly why there’s no excuse not to.

Best Sunscreens for Your Face

What to Consider

SPF Level

You’ll notice that SPF (Sun Protection Factor) comes in a variety of levels. These note how well the product protects you from getting a sunburn within two hours. Generally, the higher the SPF, the more protection you get (though no sunscreen will protect against 100 percent of UV rays, to be clear). The American Academy of Dermatology—and every dermatologist I’ve met, for that matter—recommends a minimum of SPF 30 for adequate protection for most people. In that case, I’d advise never using something below SPF 30.

Mineral vs. Chemical

Sunscreen is technically a drug regulated by the FDA, and you’ll find two types of approved sunscreens: chemical and mineral. While both are effective and neither is necessarily better than the other, they just work in different ways.

  • Chemical sunscreen: Chemical sunscreens feature ingredients like avobenzone, homosalate, and octisalate, which sink into your skin and then absorb UV rays, convert them to heat, and then diffuse them.
  • Mineral sunscreen: These sunscreens, like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, sit on top of your skin and form a physical barrier that reflects UV rays so they can’t penetrate into your skin. Mineral sunscreen may be more suitable for sensitive skin since it not only does not penetrate your skin, but also zinc (the most common mineral ingredient) has been shown to have soothing properties.

Key Ingredients

When choosing a sunscreen, the first decision is whether you want a mineral or chemical formula. Mineral filters like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide provide broad-spectrum protection and tend to be gentler on sensitive or acne-prone skin. Chemical filters, including avobenzone, octocrylene, octinoxate, and homosalate, typically feel lighter on the skin while delivering strong UVA and UVB protection.

But the best sunscreens also support skin health beyond UV defense. Ingredients like niacinamide help balance oil, calm redness, and improve texture, while hyaluronic acid and ceramide-3 boost hydration and strengthen moisture retention. Shea butter softens the skin, and aloe vera helps soothe irritation and reduce inflammation. So keep an eye out for additional key ingredients beyond sun protection when choosing a facial SPF.

How We Selected

As a grooming editor and generally pale person, I am constantly testing sunscreen on my face. For this story specifically, I considered my all-time favorites and the latest releases to compile a list of over 50 sunscreens to test or retest over the past year. I considered each one for comfort, wearability, value, and sun protection. I also evaluated how they felt on the skin, how well they held up throughout the day, and how easy they were to incorporate into a daily routine. After 12 months of hands-on testing, these are the sunscreens that stood out from the rest.

SPOOGE Ghosted Mineral All-Screen SPF 30

SPOOGE Ghosted Mineral All-Screen SPF 30

Pros

  • Water and sweat-resistant for 80 minutes
  • The quickest absorbing SPF I've tried
  • Reducing inflammation and irritation
  • Non-comedogenic
  • Safe for sensitive skin

Cons

  • Over $30 for 1.7 oz

As a fan of puns, double entendres, and crass humor, I was on board with Spooge Ghosted from the moment I saw the packaging. But the label that reads, “Disappears as fast as last week’s hookup,” is equally as accurate as it is clever because this stuff is seriously fast-absorbing. It feels like it took whatever voodoo created Supergoop used to conjure its impossibly lightweight SPF and took it to the next level.

The formula’s bisabolol and vitamin E add a skin-soothing element to its SPF 30 protection, reducing inflammation and irritation, while hydrating like a quality moisturizer. It’s water and sweat-resistant for 80 minutes, which is perfect for summer as someone who likes to swim and sweats his body weight once the temperatures go above 60 (I blame my northern upbringing).

Plus, I have sensitive skin that often breaks out after using sunscreen, and Spooge neither irritates my skin nor clogs my pores. There is really no SPF I put on my face more often and with more confidence.

Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen SPF 50

Best Lightweight Face Sunscreen

Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen SPF 50

Pros

  • Completely clear texture with no white cast
  • Matte finish
  • Suitable for all skin tones

Cons

  • Only sweat and water resistent for 40 minutes
  • Small container for price

Speaking of Supergoop!, you won’t find a more lightweight option that actually works. Its gel-like texture and quick absorption make daily SPF effortless. The formula spreads easily, leaving behind a smooth, matte finish without any white cast, greasiness, or shine. The trade-off is that the bottle is relatively small and the formula is only water-resistant for 40 minutes, so it’s not my first choice for swimming or intense workouts.

However, I did recently wear it on a five-hour hike in Zion National Park (where it was nearly 100 degrees), and it held up great. It was far from the most strenuous hike I’ve attempted, but for moderate summer activities, this stuff will hold up. For everyday wear, it’s as comfortable as they come and invisible on the skin.

Pros

  • Multiple tint option suitable for all skin tones
  • Hybrid chemical/mineral formula
  • Moisturizing formula contains niacinamide

Cons

  • Expensive for the size of the bottle

I like tinted sunscreen because it solves one of the biggest SPF problems: white cast. This formula uses just enough tint to blend cleanly into the skin without making my face look covered or overly made up. It also comes in multiple tint options, which helps it work across a wider range of skin tones without leaving obvious residue behind. The base formula makes it even stronger. It pairs mineral and chemical filters with moisturizing ingredients and niacinamide, so it hydrates, helps calm redness, and works well for dry, acne-prone, and sensitive skin types.

CeraVe AM Facial Moisturizing Lotion With SPF 30

Pros

  • Oil-free formula
  • Suitable for sensitive skin
  • Contains ceramides and moisturizing ingredients

Cons

  • May leave a slight white cast on some skin tones

I want my sunscreen to do more than just block UV rays, and this formula delivers on that front. Alongside broad-spectrum SPF 30 protection from a blend of mineral and chemical filters, it hydrates like a quality moisturizer thanks to ingredients like hyaluronic acid and niacinamide.

The oil-free, non-comedogenic formula also contains three essential ceramides to help strengthen the skin barrier and lock in moisture. Despite all that skincare firepower, it absorbs cleanly and leaves behind a comfortable, non-greasy finish that works especially well as part of a morning routine.

Best Face Sunscreen Best for Redness

Dune Suncare The Mug Guard

Pros

  • Green tinted to help with redness
  • Lightweight
  • Fragrance-free

Cons

  • Only water-resistant and sweat-resistant for 40 minutes

Sure, everybody gets red when they’re sunburnt, but for an Irish dude like me, red is my baseline. Thankfully, The Mug Guard is a solution to both problems. To most of you who need only wear sunscreen every day to avoid turning into a tomato, this SPF 30 has you covered. It’s water-resistant and sweat-resistant, so you can wear it throughout hot, sunny days without issue.

However, the Mug Guard is also green-tinted for red-faced guys like me, shielding the problem at the source. It has a silky, gel texture that’s not as lightweight as Supergoop but feels more moisturizing. Plus, it’s fragrance–free and safe for sensitive skin.

La Roche-Posay Anthelios Clear Skin Dry Touch Sunscreen SPF 60

Pros

  • Absorbs easily
  • Lightweight formula
  • Sensitive-skin friendly
  • Non-comedogenic and oil-free
  • Water resistant for 80 minutes

Cons

  • Can leave a cast when used with thicker moisturizers

I’ve declared La Roche-Posay Anthelios our best overall sunscreen for a reason. It combines high-level sun protection with a genuinely skin-friendly formula. For those with sensitive skin, this is also your safest bet for a face sunscreen. It uses ceramides, niacinamide, glycerin, and antioxidant-rich ingredients to support the skin barrier, calm redness, hydrate, and help defend against environmental damage.

Despite its SPF 60 protection and 80-minute water resistance, the SPF feels lightweight, absorbs quickly, and remains comfortable on easily irritated and acne-prone skin thanks to its oil-free, non-comedogenic formula. It delivers many of the same benefits as pricier favorites, making it one of the best overall values in facial sunscreen, as well.

Atwater Skin Armor Mineral Facial Sunscreen SPF 50+

Pros

  • Great size for travel, TSA-friendly
  • Quick absorbing
  • Leaves no cast or residue
  • Fragrance-free, safe for sensitive skin

Cons

  • Expensive, especially considering the size

Atwater Skin Armor is our best overall mineral sunscreen because it pairs reliable sun protection with a formula that actively improves skin. Alongside zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, it uses vitamin C to brighten, green tea to calm irritation, and pomegranate extract to help defend against free-radical damage caused by UV exposure. The lightweight cream absorbs quickly, leaves behind no noticeable white cast, and feels comfortable on even sensitive skin. I’ve worn it on long runs and hikes, and its 80-minute water resistance, non-greasy finish, and eye-friendly formula make it one of my favorite options for active days.

Best SPF Moisturizer for Face

Marlowe No. 128 Face Lotion with SPF 50

Marlowe No. 128 Face Lotion with SPF 50

Pros

  • Moisturizes while it protects
  • Under $20
  • Container made with at least 50 percent post-customer recycled plastic
  • Water and sweat resistant for 2 hours

Cons

  • Easy to over-apply at first

I tend to be skeptical of multipurpose products (looking at you 2-in-1 shampoos and conditioners), but this is one of the rare formulas that excels at everything it promises. Marlowe No. 128 combines SPF 50 protection with the hydration of a quality daily moisturizer, using ingredients like shea butter, aloe vera, and vitamin A to soften, soothe, and support healthy-looking skin.

The lightweight, non-comedogenic formula absorbs quickly, never feels greasy, and works well across a range of skin types, including sensitive and acne-prone skin. Add in 80-minute water resistance and broad-spectrum protection, and you have a product that simplifies your morning routine without sacrificing performance.

Dr Dennis Gross All Physical Lightweight Wrinkle Defense SPF 30

Pros

  • Features additional anti-aging ingredients
  • Fast absorbing
  • Lightweight

Cons

  • Small container for the price

To be clear, wearing sunscreen whenever you’re heading out is your best defense against wrinkles, outside of a time machine (or Botox). But this all-physical (aka mineral) sunscreen takes it to another level. The crux of the formula is lingonberry and sea buckthorn, each offering unique benefits against signs of aging.

Lingonberry is a tart fruit somewhere between a cranberry and blueberry packed with vitamin C and vitamin E, which each work to prevent and mitigate visible UV damage. Sea buckthorn is a known remedy against wrinkles thanks to its potent combination of vitamin A, C, and E, and omega-7. For me, it’s the feel of this stuff. It has the slick look and texture of traditional sunscreen, while absorbing faster than few other mineral options. It never smudges, even when I slap it on quickly on my way out.
