WE NEED TO have a quick reality check about your morning routine. If you are struggling with breakouts and skipping sunscreen because you think it’s going to make your face oilier, you are actually sabotaging yourself. When UV rays hit an unprotected pimple, they bake the inflammation into your skin, turning temporary redness into dark scars that take months to fade.
The Best Sunscreens For Acne-Prone Skin
- Best Overall: La Roche-Posay Anthelios Light Fluid Facial Sunscreen
- Best Value: Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunscreen
- Best Tinted: EltaMD UV Clear Blemish-Prone & Oil Balancing SPF 50
- Best for Breakouts: Spooge Ghosted Mineral All-Screen
- Best Daily Hydrator: ANUA Zero-Cast Moisturizing Sunscreen
On top of that, skipping out on protection leaves your skin dehydrated, which causes your pores to pump out even more grease to compensate. The good news is that modern formulation has come a long way from the thick, chalky paste your parents smeared on your face at the beach. Today’s best options are practically weightless and actively help clear up your skin while you wear them.
What to Consider
SPF Level for Healing Skin
That SPF number on the front of the bottle tells you how long the formula will shield your skin from UVB rays compared to wearing nothing at all. When you are dealing with acne, UV rays are the enemy because they bake inflammation into your skin, turning temporary redness into dark, stubborn scars.
While higher numbers offer solid protection, the golden rule for acne-prone skin is to never drop below SPF 30. This ensures your skin has enough baseline defense to heal active blemishes without being exposed to unnecessary UV damage. For these reasons, it’s also important to remain consistent.
“Daily SPF use is especially important for acne-prone individuals, as UV exposure can worsen post-acne discoloration and many acne treatments can increase sun sensitivity,” says Dr. Whitney Hovenic, MD, a dermatologist and co-founder of sunscreen brand SPOOGE.
Mineral vs. Chemical Filters for Breakouts
Every sunscreen falls into one of two camps based on how its active ingredients block the sun. Both styles protect you from UV rays, but they behave very differently on a face that is prone to pimples.
- Chemical Sunscreen: These use compounds like avobenzone and homosalate that absorb directly into your skin to convert UV light into harmless heat. Because they sink in completely, they leave zero white residue, making them awesome if you have a beard or a darker skin tone. Just keep in mind that some heavy chemical formulas can occasionally cause a tiny bit of irritation on raw, open acne.
- Mineral Sunscreen: These formulas use zinc oxide or titanium dioxide to sit right on top of your face like a physical shield that reflects light away. They are highly recommended for sensitive, breakout-prone skin because zinc is a natural anti-inflammatory. It actively helps calm down the swelling and redness of angry pimples while keeping your pores clear.
Acne-Fighting Key Ingredients
When you are fighting breakouts, your sunscreen needs to double as a treatment. You want to scan the ingredient list for heavy hitters like niacinamide, which is incredible at balancing out your daily grease production and clearing up old acne scars. Hydrators like ceramides and hyaluronic acid are also massive wins because they keep your skin calm and moisturized without using heavy, pore-clogging oils that trigger blackheads.
Non-Comedogenic and Oil-Free Labels
The absolute first thing you need your sunscreen to be is non-comedogenic. This is something we confirmed after speaking with Dr. Steven Kent, MD, dermatologist at Skin Care Physicians of Georgia.
“Acne-prone skin is sensitive to common pore-clogging ingredients,” Kent says. “For my acne patients (I am one!), I always recommend a mineral sunscreen (active ingredient is either zinc or titanium dioxide; that’s it) that specifically says on the bottle ‘non-comedogenic.’”
It’s worth noting that a comedone is an acne bump, and comedogenic means “pore-clogging.” There are plenty of chemical sunscreens on the market (like avobenzone, homosalate, octinoxate, etc.) that contain these ingredients, emollients, and preservatives that trigger acne in individuals with acne-prone skin.
Bonus points if you pair that with an "oil-free" label, and you can rest easy knowing the product relies on lightweight, water-based hydration rather than heavy lipids that will trap bacteria and sweat on your face.
How We Selected
As someone who has tested hundreds of grooming products and dealt with my fair share of sudden breakouts, I don't put anything on my face without vetting it first. For this guide, I worked with Sean Zucker, Men’s Health Grooming and Reviews Editor, and gathered the most popular acne-safe formulas on the market and put them through the wringer over the last several months.
To ensure our testing was backed by absolute medical science, we also consulted with top skin experts, including Dr. Steven Kent, MD, a Mohs Surgeon and board-certified dermatologist at Skin Care Physicians of Georgia, and Dr. Whitney Hovenic, a double board-certified dermatologist and the co-founder of sunscreen brand SPOOGE.
Together, we evaluated a master list of acne-safe sunscreens during intense workouts, humid afternoon commutes, and long days at the office to see how they actually held up in real life.
