WHEN CARMELO ANTHONY was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame last spring—in his first year of eligibility—it wasn’t much of a surprise. After leading Syracuse to its first-ever national championship in 2003, he entered the NBA as one of the most polished scorers of his generation and immediately transformed the Denver Nuggets into a perennial playoff team. He later joined his hometown New York Knicks, ushering in the team’s most successful era since Patrick Ewing was suiting up in blue and orange.

Across 19 seasons, Anthony built a Hall of Fame résumé with 10 All-Star, six All-NBA selections, and three Olympic gold medals, while displaying the effortless midrange scoring that defined an era of isolation basketball. Beyond his stellar play on the court, Melo had an unshakeable ability to meet the moment—not to mention creating a slew of viral moments.

Be it his signature three-to-the-dome celebration or “Hoodie Melo” sensation, he regularly captured the attention of the sports world. Anthony has just brought back his famous cele for a new CeraVe campaign, highlighting the three essential ceramides in its clean, simple anti-dandruff formulas. But this is more than a run-of-the-mill callback campaign that repurposes a memorable moment in NBA history. This was personal for the Hall of Famer—and revealing.

He recently opened up on his podcast, 7PM in Brooklyn, about the real story behind Hoodie Melo, admitting that it was more than a simple fashion choice. Instead, it was often used to conceal a flaky scalp. “It was just time to reveal the true story behind Hoodie Melo,” Anthony tells Men’s Health, “Everyone wanted to know its purpose, and now, hopefully, it makes sense.” Anthony says that what drew him to CeraVe is how they’re actively working to change the perception of dandruff, noting that one in five Americans suffers from the condition. “The conversation around scalp care isn't loud enough,” he says.

CeraVe’s Anti-Dandruff line is as simple as its formulas. There are only three products—Anti-Dandruff Hydrating Shampoo, Anti-Dandruff Hydrating Conditioner, and 2-in-1Anti-Dandruff Hydrating Shampoo and Conditioner—each centered on a trio of ceramides, niacinamide, and hyaluronic acid. Similar to Melo’s triple-threat jab step into a pull-up midrange jumper, it’s a perfect combination.

To fight flakes, ceramides strengthen the scalp’s moisture barrier, reducing dryness and irritation. Then niacinamide calms inflammation while regulating oil production. Finally, hyaluronic acid is one of the best hydrating ingredients around, further relieving dryness and preventing itching (which only makes dandruff worse). Plus, they’re all barely $10 a bottle—you won’t find cheaper, effective scalp care.

As part of his new partnership with CeraVe, the brand has appointed Anthony its “Head Coach of Heads”. While this title might not be up there with national champion or NBA All-Star, it is a role Anthony appreciates and is taking seriously. “It allows me to continue delivering this important message and coaching the community on scalp health,” he says. Anthony explains that during his Hoodie Melo days, he often struggled to find products that would consistently manage his flakes, noting the complicated formulas that sometimes made matters worse.

What he appreciates most about CeraVe’s formula is how streamlined its ingredients are. "What was missing from other products? It's a simple answer, and we emphasize it in the campaign: CeraVe's ceramides. That's it." As a result, he’s also brought back another signature move from his playing career for this campaign: the three to the dome celebration. Across the new campaign, you can see the All-Star holding a bottle of the dandruff shampoo or conditioner while he places three fingers to the side of his head. What once indicated a sunk three-pointer now represents a different kind of score—a healthy scalp.

Since this partnership with CeraVe, Anthony has completely changed his routine. He’s scaled back and tossed a pile of products out of his shower, leaving only CeraVe’s Anti-Dandruff Shampoo and Anti-Dandruff Conditioner. "I've had braids since I was two years old, and understanding the impact of taking care of your scalp is crucial,” he says. “Now is the perfect time for me to dive deeper into what's important.”

Melo hopes that by sharing his dandruff journey publicly, he’ll inspire others to more openly discuss theirs and find more effective solutions, particularly for other flaky dudes. "As men, paying attention to our scalp is something we really need to do.”

After tipping off against the Cleveland Cavaliers last night, the New York Knicks are playing in their second straight Eastern Conference Finals. But Melo doesn’t see things going the same way as last season, when they lost to the Pacers in six. “As a former Knick, we all know how much pressure comes with that,” he says, “So for them to come together at the right time and play the best basketball I’ve seen them play all season, it’s been fun to watch.”

Following Game 1, Melo’s prediction is looking pretty sharp, as the Knicks erased a 22-point Cavs lead to win it in overtime. Anthony credits much of the Knicks’ recent success to one player: Jalen Brunson. He points to Brunson’s ability to consistently close out tight matchups and handle not just late-game situations but the pressure of the New York media as a major boost for his squad.

Of course, Anthony is now watching these games as a member of the media, rather than a player. In addition to his podcast, he’s also been offering commentary as an NBA studio analyst for NBC this season, which has given him a fresh perspective on the game, pointing to new styles of play and unique challenges this generation of players is facing. “I'm a teacher of the game now, but I'm also still a student.”

If the Knicks were to complete this run and not only make it past the Cavs to their first Finals appearance since 1999, but actually win the whole thing—which hasn’t happened in 53 years—it will be personal for Anthony. He says that he feels, having played for the famed franchise, he was part of this journey. “I was a part of a chapter of this overall book.”

In that way, the current Knicks run is similar to Anthony’s new partnership with CeraVe. It will mean that after so many years of struggle, Melo—and New York as a whole—have finally overcome a frustratingly long, ongoing battle. Except this formula isn’t based around three ceramides, it’s centered on three Villanova graduates (Jalen Brunson, Josh Hart, and Mikal Bridges).

Whether he’s working the game as an analyst, sitting courtside as a fan, or possibly bringing his newly flake-free Hoodie Melo persona back for good luck, Anthony confirms he will be in the building for the finals, if the Knicks were to make it. As for how New York City would fare if they were to win the title after five-plus decades of missing out? “I think the city is going to burn down.”
