WHEN SUMMER HITS, I always make sure my tees are comfortable and light, so I’m not a sweaty mess before I even get to where I’m going. Too many times I’ve worn a top that was too heavy or thick, and my skin is way too damp before hopping on the train. It’s bad enough that it’s already super muggy down in the subway, so I try to take preventive measures as best as possible when choosing what to wear in the heat.

I’ve tested dozens of T-shirts alongside the Men's Health team, wearing them on office commutes, park hangs, vacations, and weekends spent walking around New York City in peak summer heat. The best summer t-shirts all have a few things in common: lightweight fabrics, breathable construction, and a fit that allows air to circulate without looking baggy. Some lean into airy cotton and linen blends, while others use moisture-wicking performance materials that keep sweat under control when the temps spike. No matter your preference, a great summer T-shirt should keep you cool and dry after you’ve stepped foot outside.

Best Summer T-Shirts

What to Consider

Fabric

Cotton

Lightweight cotton is the gold standard because it’s soft, breathable, and comfortable in the heat, but not all cotton tees perform the same. Long-staple cottons like Pima and Supima tend to feel smoother and softer, while slub cotton offers more texture and airflow.

Linen

Linen and cotton-linen blends are also excellent options for summer since linen fibers naturally allow more heat to escape, helping you stay cool on especially humid days.

Performance Fabrics

If you plan on being active, performance fabrics can be a smart alternative. Polyester, nylon, and elastane blends are designed to wick moisture away from the body, dry quickly, and stretch with movement. They’re not always as natural-feeling as cotton, but they’re often the better choice for workouts, travel, or long days spent outdoors.

Weight

Lightweight jerseys in the 120- to 180-gram range typically feel cooler and more breathable than heavyweight tees, which can become uncomfortable when temperatures climb. Ultra-thin fabrics can sometimes turn sheer, especially in white, so it’s worth finding a balance between breathability and coverage.

Fit

A summer tee should sit close enough to the body to look polished but leave enough room for air to circulate. Shirts that are too tight tend to trap heat and show sweat more easily, while overly baggy fits can feel bulky. The best summer T-shirts strike a balance: lightweight fabrics, breathable construction, and a comfortable fit that keeps you cool without sacrificing style.

How We Selected

To find the best summer t-shirts for men, I wore each one repeatedly over a stretch of real summer situations—different temps, different settings, and different levels of sweat—to see how they actually held up. Some shirts looked great on day one but started clinging, stretching out, or losing their shape after a few wears, while others quietly proved themselves as reliable daily drivers.

We also looked at fabric levels, comparing everything from airy cotton jerseys and slub knits to linen blends and synthetic performance materials. Weight and airflow mattered just as much as softness because a tee can feel great in the mirror but still trap heat once you’re outside in July humidity. And lastly, we looked at recovery (how well the neckline and hem snap back after wear), and whether each shirt still looked presentable after being tossed in a gym bag or suitcase. In the end, the winners were crowned based on comfort, breathability, durability, and versatility.

Vintage Soft Wash T-Shirt

Pros

  • Lightweight and breathable
  • Works for most body types
  • Garment-dyed for extra softness and vintage vibes
  • Stylish enough for the office and other settings
  • Available in a bunch of colors

Cons

  • Must air dry for best care

I’ve been wear-testing countless t-shirts every summer for the last four years, but this one from Flint and Tinder has remained a constant in my rotation. Clocking in at 153 gsm (grams per square meter), the vintage tee is the perfect weight for 80-degree days without feeling cheaply made. I wore it during a warm, sunny day at the park and never felt like it was too thick on my skin. I stayed cool and comfortable the whole time. The cotton-polyester blend was garment-dyed, which gives it vintage vibes like a tee I’ve owned since my college days at Howard University. The difference here, though, is it’s not too thin or see-through. The material feels soft, durable, and hasn’t become dingy after three loads in the washer. You can toss it in the dryer on low heat, but I prefer to let it air dry to prevent piling.

In the hotter months, I pair it with all kinds of shorts, but it also looks great with denim. And it’s not too shabby for the office, either. If you work in a laid-back setting, it looks neat with chinos and minimal sneakers. The classic fit works for most body types, but it’s especially flattering if you’ve been putting in work at the gym on bicep day. It’s cut close in the arms without feeling tight through the chest and falls away from the stomach, which comes in handy if you just crushed a burger. For under 50 bucks, this tee delivers serious value. It comes in a bunch of colors, making it an easy one to stock up on.

Japanese <strong>De-Luxe Cotton Linen Knit Tee</strong>

Pros

  • Lightest tee on the list
  • Wide neckline highlights collarbones and balances out narrow shoulders
  • Rib-bound collar enhances durability

Cons

  • Must dry clean

Lightweight tees are the way to go in the summer for breathability and comfort, which always brings me to this Buck Mason version. It’s one of the lightest tees I’ve worn across the board, weighing in at 95 GSM (grams per square meter). But it’s made with quality construction that takes it beyond a standard T-shirt. The cotton-linen blend is spun and knit in Japan, resulting in a fabric that feels exceptionally cool, breathable, and smooth against the skin. The linen adds a touch of texture and airflow, while details like a rib-bound collar helps enhance its durability.

I love the classic fit on this tee because it’s not too tight or too loose. I wear a small and can stretch my arms without restriction and eat plenty without worrying about a food belly showing. Compared to the other tees, this shirt had a wide neckline which balances out narrow shoulders, lengthens a short neck, and spotlights the collarbones. Since the fabric is on the thinner side, you might want to layer it under a shacket during cool summer nights. For the best care, you must dry clean this tee to keep its original shape.

Short Sleeve Summer Shirt

Pros

  • Made with breathable waffle-like texture that keeps you cool
  • Comes in over 15+ colors
  • Under $20
  • Texture disguises wrinkles

Cons

  • Be careful with frequent washing

You don’t have to shell out a ton of money for a quality summer t-shirt. For less than $20, Coofandy offers a lightweight, breathable tee with a waffle-like textured knit that looks far more expensive than the price tag suggests. The texture gives the shirt dimension and visual interest that most basic cotton tees lack, making it feel more polished with shorts or chinos.

Even on hot, humid days, the fabric stays airy and comfortable, and the relaxed fit allows for plenty of airflow. It never felt clingy or heavy, even after spending hours outside. The textured knit also did a surprisingly good job of disguising wrinkles, so it looked put together after being stuffed into a weekend bag. Now, the lightweight material isn’t as substantial or durable-feeling as Cos’ premium tee, so it may show wear faster with frequent washing. But at least at this price, you can grab in multiple colors and rotate all season long.

Boxy Tee

Pros

  • Taps into 90s-Y2K aesthetic
  • Looks great on its own or layered
  • Flowy fit makes it comfortable

Cons

  • Might not be ideal if you want a regular or slim cut

Boxy t-shirts let you breathe in the summer better than anything restrictive or muscle-hugging, which is why I wear this one repeatedly. Plus, it taps into that 90s and Y2K streetwear aesthetic, that’s very much on-trend right now. In terms of weight, it’s a tad thicker than Flint and Tinder’s tee, but still keeps me cool in the blazing heat. It’s the kind of the tee that feels flowy like a linen pant, but in shirt form. When the temps spiked into the high 80s, I barely broke a sweat.

The loose cotton fabric fit doesn’t cling to my body or hang so oversized that it looks like the shirt is swallowing me whole. It hits right at the waist and looks sharp with slim-straight pants or wide-leg trousers to keep everything proportioned. The crew neckline is reinforced with binding that helps it hold its shape instead of baconing out after a few washes or wears. For 25 bucks, it’s a steal because it looks great on its own and works just as well layered under an overshirt or lightweight jacket.

Regular-Fit Cotton

Pros

  • Elevated vibe
  • Pairs nicely with casual and dressy clothing
  • Feels substantial without being too heavy for warm temps

Cons

  • Dry clean

Cos, one of my favorite clothing brands, has mastered the art of making simple clothes feel elevated. This summer tee is a perfect example. The fit is clean, the fabric feels substantial without being overly heavy, and the minimalist design makes it one of the easiest shirts in my closet to style. I’ve worn it with everything from tailored trousers and loafers for a fancy dinner to drawstring shorts and sandals in Costa Rica. The limited color selection may be disappointing if you’re looking to add more variety to your summer wardrobe. However, I’ve managed to make both the white and black tees go with just about anything I own.

Standard Striped Tee In Cotton

Pros

  • Cotton fabric has an airy, texture that enhances breathability
  • Perfect for layering
  • Stripe design will make you stand out

Cons

  • On the pricey side

If you're looking for a summer tee with more personality, Alex Mill's slub cotton option is the one I'd recommend. The textured fabric is known for its airy feel, which explains why I wasn’t sweating bullets in nearly 90-degree temps at a music festival. Thanks to the slouchy, loose fit, I could feel every breeze that passed by. This striped number has a vintage vibe that feels lived-in right out of the box, adding depth and character that smooth jersey tees just don't have. A lot of the slouchy tees I’ve tested feel oversized, but not this one. Most times, I tuck it into chinos and pair it with loafers for a clean office fit. But if I’m keeping it super chill, I’ll wear it untucked with shorts. Sure, it’s north of $100, but you can wear it year-round with a bunch of different looks.

Best Athleisure T-Shirt

Vuori Strato Tech T-Shirt

Best Athleisure T-Shirt

Vuori Strato Tech T-Shirt

Pros

  • It’s ridiculously soft
  • It’s fitted without being constrictive
  • It keeps you noticeably dry and cool
  • Wearable outside of the gym

Cons

  • The collar tag is excessively long

The Strato Tech Tee has been one of our favorite workout shirts for years, largely because the fabric is ridiculously soft and stretchy enough for running a marathon or running errands. Vuori, one of our favorite athleisure brands, is known for making some of the best performance fabrics in the game, and this tee has it on full display. The fit is especially flattering: the sleeves hug your arms just enough to show some shape without making you feel shrink-wrapped, while the chest and shoulders get a tailored look that still leaves room through the midsection. Whether you've got broad shoulders, a bigger chest, or just want something that moves with you, it's an easy shirt to wear.

I also love how versatile it is. You can wear it to the gym, on a walk, while running errands, or just lounging around the house. The slightly cropped hem helps keep the shirt in place whether you're swinging a golf club or reaching overhead during a workout. Even when temperatures climb, the fabric does an excellent job wicking away sweat, keeping you fresh, dry, and free from those obvious sweat marks that can ruin a shirt by midday.
